Vice President Mike Pence plans to swing through the north Atlanta suburbs on Friday for a day-long trip that includes a fundraiser for 6th District special election candidate Karen Handel and a meeting with military families.

Air Force Two will land at the Dobbins Air Reserve Base at 11 a.m., the White House said. He will be accompanied by several Republican Georgia congressmen on the flight. From there, Pence plans to give a short speech after visiting with service members and their families.

In the afternoon, Pence is scheduled to headline a fundraiser for Handel, who’s locked in a nationally-watched contest to replace Tom Price in the U.S. House. The event, which Political Insider first reported about in May, is expected to be closed to the public and the press.

Side note: He’s also expected to call into Herman Cain’s show on WSB radio around 10 a.m. Friday to talk about healthcare policy and infrastructure. (Cox Media Group owns both the AJC and WSB.)

Pence is the latest national GOP figure to head to the Atlanta area to stump for the Republican former secretary of state ahead of the June 20 runoff. President Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan have already made the trek from Washington, as have several GOP members of Congress.

Republicans consider the race for the district, which spans from east Cobb to north DeKalb, a must-win. Trump carried the typically deep red district by less than two percentage points in November, and Democrat Jon Ossoff’s fundraising success and near-miss in April’s first round of voting has rattled conservatives.
