Georgia Sixth: Pence and Rubio could stump for Handel

Republican Karen Handel has already landed visits from President Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan to help her bid for the 6th District. She told supporters over the weekend she has a few more GOP targets on her wishlist.

At a meet-and-greet on Saturday, she said she “just got word that we will have Vice President Pence” make an appearance – though she had no firm date to announce.

“Hopefully it’s gonna be both a fundraiser and a rally – that’s what we’re pushing for so that we have as many people as possible,” she said, “and we’re waiting to hear from Sen. Marco Rubio to come in and do an event as well.”

Handel has sought to consolidate Republican support in her June 20 runoff against Democrat Jon Ossoff after bitter infighting between the 11 GOP candidates in the first round of the vote.

She has embraced Trump, who narrowly carried the district in November, and appeared at an April fundraiser with him. But the campaign has made no secret it is also working to bring additional surrogates to Georgia – and Rubio and Pence are at the top of the list.

Both have ties to the region and to Georgia GOP politicos.

One of Pence’s top advisers, Nick Ayers, lives in suburban Atlanta and is a possible candidate for governor. And Rubio, who won the 6th District in last year’s presidential primary, endorsed Handel rival Judson Hill ahead of the April 18 vote. He has a cadre of supporters deeply involved in state politics, including Jason Anavitarte and Mitch Hunter.

Each would also bring a hefty infusion of cash from fundraisers that are sure to follow. Handel, for her part, said that “money is coming in great” – and her campaign has said it has raised at least $2 million since the April 18 vote.

“Everyone around the country is really watching things and making sure that we have the absolute best possible team and all the resources that we need to get the job done,” she said.
