Tim Kaine is on his way to a high-dollar fund raiser in Atlanta, but his motorcade detoured a few miles north Sunday.

We told you earlier Kaine had landed and was headed to an undisclosed location. Now we can tell you: Kaine’s motorcade rolled up to Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth where the Fiesta Mexicana was being held to mark the Sept. 16 anniversary of Mexican independence.

Kaine, who is fluent in Spanish, spent more than half an hour shaking hands and greeting vendors before being enticed on stage by hosts from La Raza radio.

The Virginia U.S. senator urged the few hundred souls who braved 90 degree heat to mingle in a parking lot to register to vote and to be sure and get to the polls.

“Georgia is very important,” Kaine said in Spanish.

There was more, but we’re waiting for the full translation. We’ll have a full report later on myajc.com and in Monday’s newspaper.
