Donald Trump said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was “absolutely” on his short list for vice president as he closes in on his finalists for the No. 2 spot.
“Newt is such a great guy. He’s been such a great supporter. He’s a tremendous guy,” Trump told Fox & Friends on Friday. “Absolutely. I’ll say yes because he’s been such a supporter.”
The one-time Georgia lawmaker and former presidential candidate has become one of Trump’s most forceful advocates, defending the billionaire as a fellow political revolutionary willing to upend the status quo while other elder statesmen flocked to other candidates. With Trump saying he’s likely to tap a sidekick with political experience for the job, the ex-Georgian has positioned himself as a contender for the gig.
The short list might be pretty long, though. When pressed on other names he’s considering – Florida Gov. Rick Scott and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are among the other names he’s identified – Trump told Fox that “anybody who supports me is on the short list.”
