Why Donald Trump supporters stormed out of a Georgia GOP convention with an American flag

A war of words – and videos – is raging after spurned Donald Trump supporters marched out of one of the Georgia’s GOP district conventions Saturday with Old Glory in tow.

They bolted after Debbie Dooley, a tea party organizer and Trump ally, was blocked from a delegate slot at the 7th district’s meeting in Gwinnett by supporters of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. It was one of 14 district meetings to elect 42 delegates that took place on Saturday, and Trump’s forces did not fare well.

Video of the outraged Trump supporters quickly went viral, with a range of news outlets picking up the tale. Dooley, in a late-night email blast, claimed Cruz’s forces “systematically” kept Trump supporters off the delegate slates in Georgia. It also included this video, called “Cruz Campaign Overturns Georgia GOP Primary,” that shows a clip of what is described as “angry” Cruz supporters.

Cruz’s forces responded in kind this morning with their own video of the proceedings. The one below is presented by Michael Strollo, a nephew of prominent Cruz supporter Maria Strollo Zack. It shows the events that led up to the delegate departure, including a warning from Dooley that “if you exclude Trump supporters from the slate, it’s going to be challenged.”

The folks at Breitbart News have an interview with Ronnie Kurtz, one of the Trump supporters who described the behind-the-scenes maneuvering. He said that an alliance between Cruz supporters and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio backers helped block Dooley.

From the story:

“There was an immediate uproar in the hall, and all the Trump delegates walked out in protest. The Trump County campaign manager had conveniently brought the American flag on display in the hall and took it with him after this undercutting of democracy,” Kurtz said.

“So, after a hard fought campaign in which Trump won the primary in district 7 fair and square, no one who supports him will be representing the district in his slots at the national convention,” Kurtz added.
