The following statement from former President Jimmy Carter, who will turn 91 in October, was just released by the Carter Center in Atlanta:
“Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body. I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week.”
Last week, the Carter Center had disclosed the the former president had undergone elective surgery to “remove a small mass in his liver.” No further details were offered at the time.
There’s plenty more here in our main story, that will be updated through the evening. A piece:
Jill Stuckey, a close friend of Jimmy and his wife Rosalynn, said residents have been “praying ever since we found out about the small mass on his liver.”
“He’s done everything right. He exercises, he eats right, that’s how he’s gotten to be 90 and (still) going to different continents,” said Stuckey, who helps manage the crowds of visitors at Maranatha Baptist Church when the former president gives lessons.
There’s a history of cancer in Carter’s family, she added, “but if anyone can beat it, it’s Jimmy Carter.”
The well wishes flowed in from across the political world. From his vacation in Martha’s Vineyard, President Barack Obama called Carter and sent the following statement:
“Michelle and I send our best wishes to President Carter for a fast and full recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rosalynn and the entire Carter family as they face this challenge with the same grace and determination that they have shown so many times before. Jimmy, you’re as resilient as they come, and along with the rest of America, we are rooting for you.”
Rep. John Lewis, D-Atlanta, who worked in the Carter administration, passed this along:
“I am very sorry to hear about the illness of President Jimmy Carter. He has been a very active, productive former president. We need his wisdom, his words, and his leadership now more than ever before. We need him to continue to speak out on the great issues of our time. I will keep him, his wife and his family in my prayers. He has my most hopeful wishes for a complete recovery.”
Several more pols weighed in on Twitter:

I clinked a link to this news article and as I read these comments all I can think is how absolutlely grateful I am that I don't live in Georgia. The amount of just profoundly ignorant and disgusting comments is frankly shocking. What a petty, hateful lot so many of you are.
@northstar01 I am really saddened and embarrassed by some of these comments. Not all of us here in Georgia are hate filled rednecks, but we certainly have more than our share. Lots of these idiots troll the AJC just to spew hatred - it gets especially nasty when the subject has anything to do with civil rights. But hating on Jimmy Carter? What kind of person would glorify the pain and suffering of a man who gave so much of himself? I don't like W, the worst president ever, and even though he destroyed our economy and bears the responsibility of thousands of lives sacrificed for a war based on lies, I would never celebrate and call him names if he was dying of cancer. These trolls have NO class and NO honor. They are not representative of all Southerners.
I have lived on the planet for 70 years and I am constantly disgusted by the nastiness caused by politics. I do not care who you vote for. I do not care what party pulls your strings. I do care that humans have lost all sense of civility and humanity as to celebrate the illness of another human being. It is a shame that your lives are so piss poor that you stoop so low. If there is a God he is surely shaking his head at the state of the people inhabiting this world.
Thank you, mods.
Clearly President Carter does not participate in Obamacare as further treatment given his age and disease would be unlikely under the current system. We were recently reminded by an Obama health advisor that life after age 75 is not worth living for most of us.
@Liz Randall That is a really stupid comment and it's not true.
Wonderful man.

The hateful nasty comments made by some of the people below - especially the fake Christians quoting their cherry picked bibles to justify their nastiness - are just vulgar. Christ did not preach hatred. It really does not matter what your politics are, this is a man who has served our country since WWII and he deserves our respect. Godspeed President Carter - I'm wishing you well.
@Dixie Chicken
Jimmy Carter was the second-worst president in US history. He gave away the Panama Canal. He turned Iran from a US ally into the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism. He convinced Clinton to sign the treaty that gave North Korea nuclear weapons. He created the US housing bubble by passing the Community Reinvestment Act.
Economists had to invent the word "stagflation" to describe the results of his fiscal policies!!!
A little late for my liking, but still great news! I'll take it...better late than never.
@John Schilling I despise name calling, but IDIOT fits so well to you.
Love him. Glad he was my President.
I'll go with David in Psalms: When our enemies fall, we give the glory and thanks to God.
The man has been a staunch ideological and practical enemy of the freedom and prosperity of the average Americans for far too many years.
Therefore, in the interest of all those for liberty and independence that have been consistently undermined and hurt by this self-righteous hypocrite man?
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
And I'll answer to God for my so 'hateful'attitude for him. Afterall, Hitler did less destruction to America than he did. Dittos his superior successor Barak Hussein oblama
@Robert Derrick
Proverbs 24:17-1817 Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,
and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles,
18 lest the Lord see it and be displeased,
and turn away his anger from him.
@Robert Derrick Are you for real?
@Robert Derrick You are a twisted little man with an ugly heart. I'll pray for you because you need all the help you can get.
Jimmy Carter is a great man. Humble. Not a blowhard like Reagan. Not a hustling weasel like Bubba.
He said America suffered from a malaise. The country mocked him, then launched a series of wars.
He builds houses for others. The Clintons rob everyone.
Carter walked to his inauguration. America, alas, wants blowhard kings.

prayers for him and his family ....
Can't wait to see the movie about his presidency said absolutely no one ever.
Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.
@Cromulent How's life in your cave? Got enough chocolate, Red Bull, and porn?
@Cromulent Wishing bad things on others has a way of bouncing back at you. Hard to understand why some people enjoy the pain of others. Prayers are needed for your black heart as well.
Mr. Carter will not be alive this time next year.
RIP Mr. Carter. You were not the best president by any means but Obama proves you were not the worst.
Thank you for your service.
Turn down your thermostat to 68 and put on your Mr. Rogers sweater
I hope can live long enough to know he isn't the worse President ever, he just needs to make it until Jan. 2017
Get well President Carter.
Geez, people... I was never a fan of the Carter presidency but have a heart. I'll be praying for him and his family.
Carter has cancer? Thank You God. 52 hostages.
Thank you President Carter that 52 hostages came back alive.
@ElTombo .....thanks to Ronald Reagan
@M C G Carter authorized their rescue, remember? If's not his fault Delta Forced failed.
" ...commanders asked President Carter for permission to abort"
Operation Eagle Claw.
Get a brain, perhaps in exchange for your missing heart.
@Astronomically-Gifted @ElTombo
Reagan did squat, At least Carter authorized a special forces operation.
@Sheik Yerbouti @Astronomically-Gifted @ElTombo
They knew what was gonna happen, if they kept those hostages. That is why when he was getting sworn in, the Iranians were letting them go.
Wake up RR was no ObaMAO, who the Iranians laugh at and spit in his face!
@M C G God does not appreciate your comment.
No Surprise that it should begin with his LIVER .... It is well known that he and Rosalynn have been Heavy Drinkers for most of their married years !!
@Ching90034 How stupid can you be? Even if they were heavy drinkers, which is just not true, liver cancer is not caused by alcohol consumption. You have your diseases as mixed up.
If only he was on Obamacare!
Maybe this explains why his brain hasn't worked properly for the last 30 years. Liberal loser.
@Robert J Lynch So sad. Hate rules your life. It must be very painful for you.
@Tim Crowley @Robert J Lynch he will soon have a time to reflect upon his life and he will then know what a loser he was. This is not about hate it is about a racist liberal Commie that is about to meet his maker.
@Tony Konte @Tim Crowley @Robert J Lynch
Racist?
Commie?
Loser?
He was a president with brass ones, not a TV con man like Reagan.
@Sheik Yerbouti @Tony Konte @Tim Crowley @Robert J Lynch
brass what?
brass surrender flag?
@Robert J Lynch His brain never worked. Maybe he has ****** for brains, which would explain everything. Billy was the smart one, I think.
@Robert J Lynch Wow. Only a loser would say something so nasty.
@Robert J Lynch I despise name calling, but IDIOT fits so well with you.
@John Schilling @Robert J Lynch The two of you certainly have small ones.
Just curious . . . how many non-presidential 90-year-olds, who have somehow landed in the Obamacare wasteland, will be instructed by their IPAB overseers to head home and swallow a pain pill?
@galocke none.
Although I do not agree with Mr.Carters politics, I am praying for him that the Lord give him and his family strength during this difficult time.
