Bernie Marcus hedges his presidential bet, gives big to Jeb Bush, Scott Walker PACs

Billionaire Home Depot founder Bernie Marcus has put his substantial financial weight behind two leading Republicans running for president.

Marcus wrote a $1 million check to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s “Right to Rise USA” Super PAC, among a slew of wealthy Georgians who helped power the PAC’s eye-popping $100 million debut.

But Marcus, of Atlanta, is hedging his bets: He also gave a combined $600,000 to two PACs backing Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, “Unintimidated” and “Our American Revival.”

Marcus does not appear to have changed his mind. His big Right to Rise donation was in January, while the Walker PAC gifts were in March and May, then he donated to Bush’s campaign in June.

The philanthropist and prolific political giver is not the only major GOP donor to spread the wealth this cycle. Bloomberg reports that New York hedge fund manager Robert Mercer gave $11 million to fund a Super PAC allied with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, then the PAC shipped out $500,000 to businesswoman Carly Fiorina’s Super PAC. Mercer also gave $250,000 to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal’s Super PAC.
