Rick Allen tries to distance himself from stimulus bill

By Daniel Malloy and Greg Bluestein

The 2009 stimulus bill is a big deal in Rep. John Barrow’s re-election race, in part because the Augusta Democrat has not voted for many other big-ticket Democratic items in the Obama era. It has been the subject of a simian-themed National Republican Congressional Committee ad, and Republican Rick Allen has hammered it on the stump.Your daily jolt on politics from the AJC's Political insider blog

At the same time, Allen must distance himself from the stimulus, which was backed by the Associated General Contractors of America — seeing as the bill provided an infusion of cash for “shovel-ready” construction projects. So you have the video above (please excuse the vertical iPhone), taken in May in Candler County. Says Allen:

“I was against the stimulus package. My industry lobbied for it. And I broke with my industry association over that one issue, meaning that I quit funding that PAC because of that stimulus package. Because I knew what was in there, and I knew it was wrong, and I was against it. And  for them to — and all they’re doing is saying he supported the stimulus. I did not support the stimulus package. And as proof of that, that’s when I stopped writing checks to that PAC.”

But AGC received a check from Allen in March 2009, nearly a month after the stimulus was signed into law. He also was on the board of directors for the Georgia affiliate of AGC through at least June of that year.

His financial disclosure form this year says Allen still is a director for the group, but spokesman Dan McLagan said that was an error. Allen has not been listed as a director on the organization’s annual reports since 2009.

Allen has not donated to the group’s PAC since a month after the stimulus passed, and he had been a sporadic giver before that, tallying donations in 2007 and 2002.

The contractors don’t have hard feelings over all of this, though. The PAC has given Allen $15,000 over his two runs for Congress.

McLagan, via email, said Allen planned to continue pushing Barrow on the stimulus:

“It looks like even the Democrats are feeling defensive about Barrow’s vote for Obama’s stimulus with its coked up monkeys and sidewalks to nowhere — they should be.”

***

Barrow, meanwhile, put out a list of endorsements in all of the 12th Congressional District counties on Thursday.

The best political ad of 2012 is back, sort of, in Georgia.

At least that’s what the National Journal argues in a piece about the new Michelle Nunn ad highlighting GOP rival David Perdue’s Pillowtex plight.

It was the single most effective ad of the entire 2012 presidential campaign, according to research by Ace Metrix, a television analytics company. And the Democratic strategists who made the devastating spot are using the same themes again this year in Georgia’s Senate race. How much weight the concept carries against someone other than Romney, though, is still in question.

The Republican candidate in Georgia, David Perdue, is a wealthy businessman. And Democratic candidate Michelle Nunn has retained the same media strategists, Shorr Johnson Magnus, who made the memorable anti-Romney ads for the Priorities USA Action super PAC in 2012. The result: Nunn’s latest TV ad, which stars former millworkers (almost all women) from North Carolina who lost their jobs when their company, Pillowtex, closed down shortly after Perdue came and left as the chief executive. “He left all of us there holding the bag with nothing in it,” says one woman at the end of the ad, which contrasted Perdue’s high salary with the workers’ predicament.

It cuts right at Perdue’s biggest strength: his business experience. And research Ace Metrix conducted for National Journal shows just why ads like this work. The data suggest that while the Nunn ad isn’t quite as potent as the anti-Romney one, it’s grabbing hold of Georgians’ attention just as their Senate race starts to heat up.

Leslie Shedd, the spokeswoman for Georgia Victory, the GOP-backed effort to win the Senate seat, couldn’t help but chime in.

“If this is the best ad that Democrats have to offer,” she said, “then they’re going to have a long and painful road to November.”

Lightning rod U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is staffing up for a possible White House run. From the Washington Examiner:

To help the Tea Party-affiliated senator manage his role as a national leader and prepare for a possible White House run, his political shop has added Jason Miller as a digital and communications advisor, Jeff Roe to offer organizational guidance and help run Cruz’ more nationally focused operation and Lauren Lofstrom to handle national fundraising.

The Missouri-based Roe was Jack Kingston’s general consultant for his Senate campaign.

***

Atlanta’s First Baby met Georgia’s First Lady this week.

Gov. Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed are known for their famed friendship. It seems their wives have struck up a relationship, too.

***

GOP Senate candidate David Perdue picked up the endorsement of former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton.

Bolton’s two political action committees, which report a combined $3 million in cash on hand, also pledged to support the candidate.

It’s the second time Bolton has popped up on Georgia’s political radar this month. He co-authored an op-ed with Gov. Nathan Deal in early August on Georgia’s expanding partnership with Israel.

Allowing same-sex couples in Georgia to marry could generate almost $80 million in spending for Georgia’s economy.

That’s according to a study released this week from the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law.

The study estimated that about 10,000 of Georgia’s 21,000 or so same-sex couples would marry in the first three years, bringing a $50 million boost in the first year alone. In all, the study found it would add $5.5 million in sales tax revenue and create almost 1,000 jobs.

@DS

I could not have said it better.

You did a great job illustrating how the President and congressional dems have compromised or at least was willing to compromise with the Republicans.

Repealing gay-hate legislation would create more jobs than just about all of Nathan Deal's, and the GaGOP's, bribes to big business have. That's amazing. And It wouldn't cost $100k in tax breaks for every menial job created.

Take a lesson from Blue America. Repeal marijuana prohibition, too. Conservatives pretend to be small govt, but these are glaring examples to the contrary.

And who wasn't for the stimulus bills? Has everyone forgotten that Act of the play?

A Message to Our Young David aka Jason Carter and Michelle. The Next time you see the MeatHEAD and Backstabbing Mayor of Atlanta Kasim Reed. I do hope the both of you express to him your sincere Disappointment about his underhanded swipe of Betrayal.

As well as a SHOT across the BOW of of both your campaigns to undercut your successful push with this very SHAMELESS PHOTO OP of an intentional sham of support for Governor Deal.

This goes the same for the Leadership Group of the Democrats of Georgia. Kasim may be a big money draw to your Party but more than that he is a SELFISH Betrayer of Democrat goals and Principles.

You must know and understand, this Fact.  Kasim Reed ain't yer friend nor is he on the side of the Good Democrats of Georgia.

Kasim is on the Side of Kasim Reed alone and no one else!  This Clown is a selfish political opportunist, one Georgia has never seen, since the likes of since ole ZIG ZAG ZELL.  A Political HYBRID if yer will.

Kasim Reed is NOT one to be Trusted or counted on...to do so is a gamble for a JUDAS you would never see coming with a SMILE.

PS.  Michelle Nunn...Please, No KING CHILDREN....!! We have hand enough of their selfish Shenanigans as Well.

Bernie31

A Very strange occurrence is happening in Southwest Atlanta too. Vote for Michelle Nunn signs are suddenly appearing all over the Major roadways of Southwest Atlanta.

A message to the Michelle Nunn campaign - You are going to have TRY HARDER and DO MORE than just put Yard Signs littering the Roadways of our streets with your Name. We need to see your Face and hear Your voice. If,  YOU are TRULY INTERESTED in OUR VOTE as a community in order to get OUR SUPPORT. To date you have been MIA - (missing in Action) and Right Now you are not well liked, known nor even TRUSTED enough, for many of US to get behind your campaign against that known and verified JOB KILLER Gold Parachute wearnin David Perdue.

Michelle you must understand this is a NEW Day and We as a community are no longer are the Automatic LEVER PULLER for the Georgia Democratic apparatus. A corrupt organization being led by corrupt and untrustworthy politicians like Atlanta's Mayor Kasim Reed. We have not much time before Election Day and your Political success and future depends on our active participation and support.

Up until now your decisions have not been Wise nor effective, when it comes to understanding of this very important and very politically active community.  Currently, You are in need of a desperate injection of a Boost of support to help swing a successful Win come November.

The Choice is Yours to Lose. Lip service we are not interested in. So if you are Brave enough and really want your Senate Win. I urge you to do your homework and be prepared to answer some questions if you are Brave enough to Face these Voters that you need and want. We are not going to Beg you and if you ignore US. WE too, will ignore you in kind.

You can leave Kasim, Andy and Shirley and the rest of the Cascade Road Mafia at home.

They will only incite Anger and Rejection. Come to stay awhile and spend some time. Hit and Runs are not acceptable nor will it be tolerated. We are willing to listen to YOU. If You are willing to listen to US as well. You must State your Case and be open for some reconsideration and re-evaluation of previous statements and positions. For many have questioned your choice of words and those you have sought support from. I am just being Honest with you to give you a Heads UP..."IF" I mean that

IF you want to be Georgia's NEXT Junior U.S. Senator.

David Perude...do not waste yer time....Keep a movin. Your name is persona non grata in these Parts. for We already know the Snake in the grass you are and you have already been soundly rejected as a viable Option for consideration.

But to you Michelle that rejection does not mean a automatic support for your Office Run. So do not get it twisted and listen to those around you who have already costs you greatly a Huge Loss of support and potential New Voters.

A smart candidate will read and understand the Wisdom of My words. A Fool and a Loser will continue on the Path they are on and HOPE for a better outcome in November.

Now this Picture with the Furst Lady Sandra Deal and De Recent to come to be de FURST lady of Atlanta Mrs. Kasim Reed is what the smart Folks call "IRONY".

You have the smilin Governor's Wife whose Husband's Policies, Governing decisions and crude evil rhetoric is, anti healthcare for children, Welfare and Food stamps.  ANTI-Children and Babies, especially the Black ones but also the White and other Brown children of Georgia.

Then you have the Wife of the Bootlickin Water Carrying Mayor for the Governor, The Mayor of Atlanta whose own Constituents in the METRO Atlanta Area represents the Largest Uninsured Population in the ENTIRE State of Georgia. let me say it again..... The Metro ATlanta area has The Largest Uninsured, Foodstamp and Welfare dependent Population of The ENTIRE STATE! and The Mayor has said NUTHIN, NADDA, ZIPPO, ZERO, Goose Eggs, about nor on behalf of their POOR condition or STATUS or advocate For Medicaid Expansion for these Voting Citizens too, Of Atlanta and Georgia.

We have The Mayor Of Atlanta Kasim Reed who is as Quiet as of this comment, as a CHURCH MOUSE on Peachtree Street on a Sunday Morning during Church service, in the Steeple about to take a pee on a Ball of Cotton as the Preacher is about to deliver a Message on Helping the Poor.  Has not said a SINGLE WORD in Public or Private according to Sandra Deal ( cause they don't discuss such issues) to the Governor about the ISSUE of expanding Medicaid Coverage for the Tens Of Thousands of whom are Children, Mothers, Seniors, Disabled, Handicapped, Mentally Handicapped and OUR Beloved Veterans throughout the State of Georgia.

Now we have The Two FURST Ladies "POSING" like Everything is Hunky Dory and jest Lovin.

Who are these People? Dear Lord, they are BOLD ONES for sure!

My God, do not any of you have any Depth of Compassion or Caring UDDER than yer Selfish selves,

I ask of YOU?

Truly Shameful and Disgusting. A Black Mayor in The Home of Dr.Martin Luther King,JR. The Drum Major for Justice for the POOR and disenfranchised. My Eyes cannot Believe the VERY BOLD and Brazen Hypocrisy of POOR Leadership by these People!

The Baby Jesus is not HAPPY with the (4) Four of YOU at ALL!

No Way!

Truly Shameful and very disappointing Mrs. Reed. You a Trained Lawyer...Know Better! even if Kasim is a selfish Shallow vessel of an Empty SUIT!

You should not be participating in such Offensive Political Shenanigans of the likes of Nathan Deal...and yer know it!

Poor is not an excuse for not being success student:

  • The number of low-income graduates who took at least one AP exam during high school increased from 2,665 in the class of 2007 to 9,806 in the class of 2012. The number of these students who scored 3 or higher on at least one AP exam increased from 880 to 3,641.

td1234
td1234

Couple more education stats that make progressives look uninformed and liars stating Georgia education is failing under Republican rule.

  • Georgia is 9th in the nation when comparing the ten-year increase of seniors scoring a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam (10.1% growth compared to 7.9% for the nation).
  • The number of African American graduates who took at least one AP exam during high school nearly doubled in five years, from 4,555 to 8,900. The number of these students who scored 3 or higher on at least one AP exam more than doubled, from 1,086 to 2,417.

td1234
td1234

I have made a mistake. Georgia Black students are not #1 in the nation on AP test they are number 2.

  • 13.6 percent (2,417) of African American students from Georgia’s public high school class of 2012 scored 3 or higher on at least one AP exam during high school (ranking Georgia 2nd in the nation), compared to 4.4 percent for the nation.

In a growing trend, Tennessee looks like it will be the next Republican-led state to move toward expanding Medicaid under Obamacare.

The Tennessean reported that Gov. Bill Haslam (R) said Thursday that Tennessee would aim to submit a Medicaid expansion plan to the Department of Health and Human Services "some time this fall." The program would cover more than 150,000 low-income residents in the state.

1: Stop have children unwed with no father in the house.

2: The parents that set high expectations and demand excellence of their children are doing very well in this state as by the fact that Black children in Georgia lead the nation in the number that takes and passes AP test. Those children are succeeding and those parents should be applauded for being a parent. The failing parents should be chastised for being so sorry.

My children are doing well in Georgia's education system. I just had one with a freaking Learning Disability graduate for HS with a 3.71 GPA and is now in college and the other one has straight A's.

I have one niece graduate for GA HS, get into Cornell and now has a job making over $100,000 per year (25 years old) on wall street. Another niece graduate from GT (24) and is making around $100,000 per year and two other nieces that are Sophomore and Freshman at GT. BTW: They are all considered minority students.

Poor (black or white) is not an excuse for not succeeding in the educational system in this state because the stats prove it can be done. Blaming education or lack of money is total BS because we have great gains in education while at the same time, progressives claim Republicans took $4 billion out of education.

The problem in this state is we have sorry parents that are not doing their jobs and if we really cared about the children then we would come together and demand these parents do their jobs and hold them accountable for not doing it.

Question: Is My AP Score Good Enough?

Answer: AP scores are much more straight-forward than SAT scoresor ACT scores since the AP is graded on a simple 5-point scale. However, not every college treats AP scores the same way.

Students who take the AP exam will get a score ranging from 1 to 5. The College Board defines the numbers as follows:

  • 5 - Extremely well qualified to receive college credit
  • 4 - Well qualified to receive college credit
  • 3 - Qualified to receive college credit
  • 2 - Possibly qualified to receive college credit
  • 1 - No recommendation to receive college credit
