Jason Carter’s campaign questions Nathan Deal’s salvage yard sale

By Greg Bluestein

The controversial sale of Gov. Nathan Deal’s salvage yard business resurfaced Thursday as both campaigns traded shots over Democrat Jason Carter’s plan to go after tax cheats.

Carter pledged this week that his administration would seek to recoup an estimated $2.5 billion in back taxes highlighted by a recent Georgia audit, and that he would funnel those proceeds into education. Deal’s camp saw it as another sign that Carter didn’t have a “serious” plan to fund education, and called on him to outline specifics.

The Democrat’s campaign took that as an invitation to open a new line of attack against Deal invoking the sale of his Gainesville Salvage & Disposal business to Texas-based Copart, which netted the governor and his business partner $3.2 million apiece. Days later, it was revealed that Copart was locked in a lengthy dispute with the state over as much as $74 million in back taxes.

Carter spokesman Bryan Thomas previewed the campaign’s new angle in a press release on Thursday that accused the governor of collecting checks for himself while not pushing to resolve Copart’s case.

“He pockets $10,000 every month from a major tax cheat,” said Thomas. “Why would he want to go after them?”

Deal has said he had no knowledge of Copart’s tax woes because the property he sold was run in a blind trust, which means the assets are controlled by a third party. His spokesman Brian Robinson said the governor “expects Copart to pay every cent that it owes to the state.”

“This is yet another example of how Jason Carter will say absolutely anything to change the subject when he gets caught making hollow promises that he can’t back up,” said Robinson. “Carter says he welcomes a debate on cutting ‘waste,’ but weeks have passed and he still can’t name one thing he’s cut. Quite the contrary, it seems like every time he opens his mouth he promises to spend millions more.”

Better Georgia, the left-leaning group boosting Carter’s bid, unveiled an online ad last week trying to draw a line between the Copart sale and the struggle of everyday Georgians. Today’s broadside from Carter’s campaign was a sign that this line of attack will likely become a mainstay during the election’s final weeks.

This is a welcome advertisement. Voters need reminding of what a scoundrel the current governor is. And it hardly makes sense that anyone who came into office bankrupt would need a "blind trust". The only thing that's blind about Nathan Deal's many shady activities is the way he tries to conceal his these schemes from the general public.

Aren't we sick of this sort of thing with this lousy governor? Millions of Georgians on food stamps and a governor who is clearly looking out for himself while getting rich on the take.

Politicians and their supporters in both parties do a great job at using deceptive language. It's a dirty blood sport. Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive. Anyone who thinks one party has a monopoly is blind. Same goes for corruption. That said, some are better liars and thieves than others, and others rarely lie or steal. Some are honest. The thinking person puts preconceived notions aside to figure which is which.

Jason " Empty Suit " Carter and his handlers don't care if they tell the truth or not because the majority of their voter base can't read so they believe what ever comes out of Jason's ( handlers) mouths. Carter's Grandpa knows who he loves and it's Hamas not Israel yet Young Carter stills takes the Jews money

Carter and the progressive movement is Georgia is attempting to throw all the mud they can the truth and any real facts be damned. This is yet another example as to how morally corrupt the progressive movement really has become.

So Deal didn't know about a company that owes the state $74 Million? Now I am quite sure as Governor you can't keep up with every detail but how many companies out there owe the state $74 Million? Surely the governor was aware of biggest tax problems as he dealt with budget shortfalls and slashing budgets. But then again if we are to believe he didn't know that the company that bought his salvage yard owed GA that kind of money it does kind of fit in with not planning ahead for a winter storm, not taking care of teacher health insurance needs, not working to make sure medical marijuana got through the legislature until after the session closed, not knowing his aides are negotiating with the ethics chief, and the list goes on. One of two things...either he knew and chose to ignore it for his own personal gain, or he truly didn't know and simply wasn't paying attention again. Either we he should not be our governor.

Please, we all know a blind trust is a code word for "let's sell out, and we'll plead we didn't know Copart owed $74 million in back taxes."  There's no such thing as a blind trust---that 's been proved by political misdeeds for many years.  Governor, we aren't stupid.

td1234 appears to be on his tirade once again.  Don't you have a job td?  Obviously Deal is once more wrapped up in unethical and shady dealings regarding public money.  If td could vote at the Polls as many times as he posts on the blogs, Deal might get 10 percent of the vote, but, at this point, td only gets one vote and we already know what it is.  Td tell us why you want to keep this criminal in office - are you also getting money under the table?  (Elaine Boyer tells me she would like an older right winger to share her cell - interested? She wants to know if you play Bridge.)

"Gov.-elect Nathan Deal plans to give up an unprecedented level of control over his assets and debts before he takes office.

Deal will give a trustee unilateral authority over his homes, his investments, his half-interest in an automobile-salvage company — “everything,” said Randy Evans, the governor-elect’s attorney. The trustee will publicly disclose his or her actions but may act without Deal’s knowledge or approval."

True.

But we have 4 years of experience to see beyond any doubt that shady is just an old school, ham handed crook.

Why would anyone vote for him against any opponent?

Tell me, o tiny dog, why has there been such a full court press effort to keep the REAL FACTS from being openly aired.

The man is the Governor of a backward southern state, this isn't a private golf debt or something, it is a huge transaction that leaves the state with huge unpaid taxes!!!

I realize that you think unpaid taxes are somehow a good thing, but here in the real world we view it as crooked on a large scale and worthy of prosecution.

@EdUktr How much different would this analysis be if it included the polling data of Hicks Evaluation Group (D) which it does not? Something that I have noticed with all of your post.  Statistically speaking wouldn't that be the appropriate thing to have included before you start spray painting this board with your favorite past time polls?   I don't know which is worst td1234 running around the board all day with his arms up or you hunting down polls for reassurance.

Now Imagine what Nathan Deal would see...First you would see a scowl and then a frown of he can't believe what is before him. he considers Race Mixing as FITHY! Unacceptable! A Sin before GOD!

Now how do yer SQUARE yer undying Love for a MAN Yer know who HATE....I mean Hate the most precious Love ones to you in the entire World. You being a White Man an ALL..that really should bother you and cause for a reconsideration of this Man's Character.

Surely she would have a different Feeling knowing that Her Husband is showing hours upon Hours for a Man and a Political Party that TRULY HATES Her STINKIN GUTS!

Something is Truly wrong with yer thinking....I would Love to hear your insight on what I believe should be a very important discussion and reflection of yer current political thinking.  Give it some serious thought and consideration if yer will. @Wascatlady @td1234 As I recall, Sonny refused to use a blind trust, and, made a fortune as governor.  Deal claims to have put his assets in a blind trust, but, it was evidently not Deal proof. I read an article that stated he and his partner had taken part in the Copart sale despite the so called trust.
