Nathan Deal’s run-in with immigration activists at UGA

By Greg Bluestein

Gov. Nathan Deal was in Athens speaking to College Republicans on Tuesday when four students stood up to question him about the Board of Regents policy that bans undocumented immigrants from attending the University of Georgia.

The four-minute video of the encounter, courtesy of Flagpole’s Blake Aued, gets testy around the 1:55 mark, when Deal addresses a white student named Carver Goodhue, who questioned the governor’s position on the ban.

“There is a fundamental problem that can only be solved at the congressional level – and that is to deal with the issue of children – and I presume you probably fit the category – children who were brought here …”

That’s when another student named Lizbeth Miranda, who was standing near Goodhue, interjected.

“I don’t. I’m not an illegal immigrant. I’m not undocumented. And I don’t know why you thought that I was undocumented. Is it because I looked Hispanic?”

As the crowd murmured its displeasure, the governor apologized.

“You made the statement. You stood up, so I apologize. I apologize if I insulted you. I did not intend to.”

Deal spokesman Brian Robinson said he spoke to the governor late Tuesday to try to pin down what happened. He said Deal was aiming his comments at Goodhue when the three other students stood up.

“He was very polite and responded to any confusion,” said Robinson. “But he was trying to ask questions. And he wasn’t getting any response. He was not talking to Miranda.”

After seeing the video on Wednesday, Robinson added: “The video eviscerates the inflammatory way it was presented by Democrats last night. And it shows the governor being very polite and trying to have a policy-based conversation. This is just a Democratic stunt.”

Here’s the Athens Banner-Herald’s account of the start of the interaction:

“Gov. Deal, you spoke about protecting the HOPE Scholarship and you’re a supporter of education, but why do you deprive undocumented immigrants who’ve lived here their entire lives from the right to come here and attend school with all of us?” asked Carver Goodhue, who stood in the audience of more than 100 along with supporters Kevin Ruiz, Preethi Raja and Lizbeth Miranda.

Deal argued there is no effective way, at least not at the state level, to help the would-be students who want to attend classes at UGA and other state universities but are barred from doing so by a four-year-old Board of Regents policy. And anyway, he said, Georgians wouldn’t support revoking the measure.

Flagpole’s Aued was also in the room, and here’s his take of the video:

The video opens with Carver Goodhue, who is white, asking Deal, “why do you deprive undocumented immigrants who’ve lived here all their lives the right to come here and attend school with us?” The last few words should have tipped Deal off that Goodhue is a UGA student and, thus, a legal U.S. resident.

“It is really something that can only be dealt with by the federal government at the congressional level, dealing with DREAM Act children, which I presume that maybe you are,” Deal replies. The DREAM Act is a bill that would allow undocumented young people who attend college a path to citizenship.

Actually  it is simple to  assume that if a person is not a legal immigrant they should never be allowed to  be funded by Hope or by any kind of scholarship   that is funded by and for legal citizens. This was no more that another  stunt  from the  few who side with Illegal immigration and who wish to try to make it  seem otherwise.

Little 'ole Jason would have responded with nonsense that "Yes. I will make sure that illegals here are able to use HOPE to go to school while at the same time taking away HOPE from legal GA residents who parents are rich."

These 4 little 'ole clowns make fine liberals - interrupting the governor while he speaks shows very little maturity.

It's interesting he keeps blaming it on Congress.  He's the guy that signed the bill in 2011 that left Georgia farmers crops spoiling in the fields.

Nothing worse than student protesters; they have all the ideology and zero experience.

“I don’t know why you thought I was undocumented. Is it because I look Hispanic?” one of the students, Lizbeth Miranda told him.

No, it is because you are supporting undocumented immigrants and he assumed you had some experience in the matter, not just an ideological point of view. Or because her name was Lizbeth and that confuses everyone.

I want to know what is going to be done about the people who have renounced their American citizenship, but are still in the US, taking advantage of our infrastructure, education system, and everything else this country offers while paying few if any taxes. The people I am referring to are named Apple, Sara Lee, Liberty Global, and now Burger King. Since they have basically renounced their American citizenship and moved to Ireland and Canada to avoid paying their fair share of taxes, that would make their prresence here 'illegal aliens' would it not? I say deport them post haste. Workers at burger king alone receive over $350 Million yearly in public assistance because the corporation--excuse me, person--will not pay their workers a livable wage, Just think how much the other illegal aliens like Apple and Sara Lee are costing us. Send them back to the country they now call home.

You know, the biggest problem is that we focus on clinging to outdated and reactive immigration laws, instead of realizing that we are dealing with the natural effects of migration.  Migration means that people follow where the better living is in order to survive.  That will not change.  When the US begins to create laws that understand that, then we'll have a successful immigration program in this country.

StraightNoChaser

@td1234 I did not support the TARP bailout but your argument is total BS. All the TARP money that went to the banks were paid back (with interest) to the US government.   1st I do believe I was talking to the tea leaf not you td1234.  I see you have chugged down your gallon of obfuscation this morning ensure you bring your 'A' game of BS. The bailout was not just loans made, but asset purchases as well. The bottom line: a Federal Reserve bailout commitment in excess of $29 trillion.  Also, Of the 780 investments made by the Treasury, 552 have resulted in a profit. 116 of the investments resulted in a loss. So far, the profits amount to $46.5 billion, while the losses amount to $17.4 billion. 112 of the investments are still outstanding.  Keep trying td1234 you just may succeed one day.

The real scandal is that the Obama administration did not pay off debt with the money paid back but instead spent the money on more government programs. 2nd. This is the real scandal some in the financial industry were accused of not using the loaned dollars for its intended reason. Others further abused investors after the TARP legislation was passed by telling investors their money was invested in the federal TARP financial bailout program and other securities that did not exist.  Warrants were issued td1234.  Republicans are so worried about everyone else being criminals when they are the biggest criminals in the country.  Deport your own damn selves.

@J. White Actually, the HOPE Scholarship is funded by the state lottery, which doesn't bar any undocumented or "illegal" citizens from buying tickets. So, technically, anyone who buys lottery tickets pay into this specific system.

@Jim Lahey So if I am a defense attorney for a murderer, would you assume I am one as well? Having experience in the matter does not make one an actual participant. I don't have cancer but will stand and advocate for cancer research. It was simply a stupid assumption on Deal's part and speaks volumes about his level of thinking. He is from Hall County - an area of high volume of illegals. I can make an equally ignorant comment about that as well.

Nothing is going to be done, that's it.

The entire system is corrupt and the people at the GOP fight a livable wage at every point possible yet it's impossible to live on $8.00 an hour.  Hence they are talking out of both sides of their mouth.  As to the argument, those are just training jobs or for extra money, horse hockey.  You've relegated a segment of the population to permanent government stewardship.

for many many years I was strongly against having a National( Federal) I.D. Card, but as time as moved on and I see what is happening in our country that time has come.

Go to Germany and stay longer or announce upon arrival that you plan to stay over 60 days an see what they hand you and tell you to keep on your person at all times, and they make you settle your tax bill before you leave.  Then look at France, who completely dissolved their government this week because the socialism, and liberal approach as left them unemployed, over taxed and over crowded with foreigners who spend more time in unrest than promoting work.

The U.S.has the most generous legal immigration policy on the planet. We take in more legal immigrants than every other nation on earth combined.

We can't, however, absord everyone who seeks "a better life" because our resources are not unlimited.

The "biggest problem" is not a change in U.S. law but in the economic stabilization of other nations. America cannot solely support the dreams of the entire world.

@Jim Lahey The student he was directing the assumption to was a white male.  While I'm glad he could not have assumed that because he was Latino he was therefore undocumented, he did assume, and stated that, if the white male student was supporting illegal immigrants, this student must be illegal, too.

@WBisHere I agree that we need to support economic stabilization in other countries.  But we cannot control climate, which is also an issue.  We can put up all the strongest barriers and provide support to other countries, and people will still try to live here.  It's not about just getting into the US, it's about living here.  And, when people try to scale back opportunities for undocumented people who live here, they are also scaling back opportunities for those who are legitimate citizens to live freely.  Fear doesn't beget freedom; it creates prisons of many different kinds.

If someone needs $15.00 an hour to live flipping burgers without government assistance, so be it.   The price in corporate taxes is already built into the product to pay for government entitlement programs.  Either way, you pay for it.  With a higher wage, the person is independent of the government programs.   What say you?

Please read slowly to digest the content,  read it twice if it helps

The people that make $8.00 an hour at Wendys  in many cases qualify for government assistance programs via state or federal programs.  If you raise the wage and eliminate the subsidy, someone may lose a tax write off, but, that's about it.  I'd love to hear your idea about eliminating the entitlement programs and keeping the minimum wage.   Please respond.

td1234
td1234

@StraightNoChaser @td1234 You are the one that is a bigot. I have met plenty just like you that sees everything with nothing but color in their eyes.

Yes, tell us all how the black family is better off today under the great civil rights movement and buying getting on the white progressive plantation than they were under Jim Crow. Prove it with the stats you like to pull out of your butt.

70 plus % of all blacks born today are out of wedlock and into poverty than in the 50's and 60's. How is this better today?

Blacks murdering blacks in the streets at a far greater rate than the KKK could have dreamed about in the 50's or 60's. How does this make following the progressive agenda make the black family better?

Black women lead the nation in killing their own children. How is this better for the black community?

You see td1234 just as efficiency is not determined by ones skin color neither are criminals.  When I look at a criminal I don't see color I see a criminal.  When I look at how efficient someone may be I do not look at color I look at the persons qualifications.  When I look at poverty I don't see color I see poverty. You td1234 and all the other southern conservatives are what the problem is with race relations in this country.  While the rest of are becoming and have become color blind you still see everything as "blacks" and "whites"  your two favorite words. You are attempting to use the way I look at the world and claim it is the way you se things but we both know that is one big LIE. This is a typical tactic of a progressive and right out of your playbook written by Sal Alinsky.

The only move you have is to obfuscate and name call because I just showed above that the progressive agenda has destroyed the black family.
