Republicans come out swinging against Nunn, Carter at GOP unity event

By Greg Bluestein

The top candidates on Georgia’s Republican ticket pulled no punches at a Wednesday event meant to show the GOP was solidly behind Senate candidate David Perdue.

Georgia GOP heavyweights are trying to coalesce behind David Perdue's Senate run.

Georgia GOP heavyweights are trying to coalesce behind David Perdue’s Senate run.

All that establishment angst over Perdue’s candidacy? Gone, said GOP chair John Padgett, who called the former Fortune 500 executive a “rock-solid conservative with a stellar record in business” who can defeat Democrat Michelle Nunn.

Gov. Nathan Deal, who steered clear of picking favorites in the primary or the runoff, made sure to point out how happy he is he’ll be sharing the top of the ticket with Perdue. Deal, of course, faces a stiff challenge himself from state Sen. Jason Carter.

“He and I have a lot in common. We are both the children of two public school teachers in the state of Georgia. Both of us grew up in middle Georgia. We know the values that Georgians hold. We were educated in the public schools and we went to colleges here in the state of Georgia. Those are the kinds of contrasts that I think will be drawn here in the next couple of months.”

Carter, who was born in Atlanta and grew up in Chicago, went to Duke University before graduating from the University of Georgia’s law school. Nunn spent much of her childhood in the Washington area and graduated from University of Virginia and later got a master’s degree from Harvard.

Deal then took aim at  the famous lineage of the top Democratic contenders. Carter is a grandson of former President Jimmy Carter and Nunn’s father is former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn.

“There’s another difference. We’re not running on our namesakes. Our opponents are going around the country raising money because they have good names. I don’t have a problem with that … But you know, we believe a candidate ought to stand on their own record, on their own priorities.”

Left unsaid was Perdue’s famous lineage. His first cousin, the former Gov. Sonny Perdue, was his highest-profile supporter, and much of his campaign network came from his relative’s base.

Perdue, for his part, stuck to the same line he gravitated toward after his victory last night: The race will be more about President Barack Obama than about Michelle Nunn.

“My role in this in the fall is to prosecute the failed record of this administration. … I believe this economy is ready to bust out if we just take some common-sense free government principles.

Democrats are already seizing on the brutal attacks Perdue’s GOP rivals targeted against him during the bruising primary and the nine-week runoff. Nunn’s backers released this video this morning:

Perdue sought to brush the concerns aside.

“Those things really didn’t stick. The people of Georgia heard our message. The message is we have a broken model in Washington. And I’ve offered up an alternative to that broken model, and that’s what people are responding to.”

Absent from the meeting was Rep. Jack Kingston, narrowly vanquished by Perdue on Tuesday, who was invited but did not attend.

Perdue said they had a “delightful” conversation and shared strategy of how to win in November.

Michelle's resume highlights:

1. Sam Nunn's daughter

2. Supporter of Hamas

3. Darling of Pelosi and Reid and Hollywood big spenders

That's about it

I wonder how many Dems crossed over to vote for Perdue because he will be easier to beat. That video of all the other Republican candidates blasting him for his business record is amazing.

This going to be a good election in November to see crooks get defeated.

Perdue sent 900 America jobs overseas and Deal is a crook.

It's going to get really interesting now.  Can't wait to hear all the mud slinging the Dems and Repubs throw at each other. Pull out all the bones from each other's closets and make it a real show.  (Just joking)

What I really want is for each senate candidate to state what they stand for and how they'll represent our state.  I don't think either party will tell us what they will do if they get elected.

Perdue looks "out...standing in his field" on his ads...or should I say pasture....the wardrobe, makeup , lighting and location departments did good!  Is that all it takes any more...just one good photo??

I would never vote for someone Karen Handel supports, which was Kingston.

If that what, 3-4 times? loser, was running against Vernon Jones, I would vote for Vernon

Blue Jeans and blue jean jackets win elections by the way every time.

Christian conservatives "coming out swinging"? Now THAT'S funny!

Kingston was the Chamber of Commerce candidate. That makes Perdue the Tea Party candidate by default. I think that the press and the commentators here have missed this.

The immaturity of the posters here is amazing- or are they reflecting their IQs?

This is the problem with politics today- the left and much of the right is incapable of an adult conversation. Do you not realize that when you are name-calling you have zero chance of persuading an opponent?

The death of America will be the ignorant voter; they are the reason that the repulsive negative ads are apparently necessary. And those how don't understand that the evil twins "business" and "corporations" are the source of economic growth and jobs are the most frightening of all. Maybe we can read them "The Goose who Laid the Golden Eggs" and get some comprehension from them.

"Kingston, this is the president.  I heard you lost. Let me be clear: YOU LOST.  Looks like you won't be coming to the Senate.  No need to call me back. Please, don't call me back."

Let Purdue and None debate, he will wipe the floor with her.

Just wait, if you think the Kingston/Purdue was nasty, you ain't seen nothing yet. Purdue will expose her for what she is. Someone hiding behind a name that isn't even hers. She's  a weak candidate at best. And please, don't pay attention to the polls,we saw what that means.....NOTHING.

@Bubba30342 Those videos are now part of the permanent social media archives. When will the GOP learn?  I hope never.

@Bubba30342  Those candidates are the reason Perdue won. If these clowns don't like him, he must be what's best for Georgia.

@Don W Webb Don, good to know that you are out there sir.  I wish we had a chance.  Unfortunately there are too many single issue voters (most people) that vote on social issues.  We really have no chance of getting any democratic voters that vote on fiscal issues as our party is way far to the right of the GOP (where we should be).  I have been fighting this fight since I was 18 in 1996 and I put a Harry Browne for president sign in our yard when I was in high school.  I never understood what gun rights had to do with gay marriage or what less welfare (both corporate and individual) has to do with abortion rights or foreign wars for that matter .  Don, you are most likely more intelligent than most voters when it comes to politics (your link to the libertarian candidate proves that), but I don't think we ever get above the 10 percent margin as Bob Barr (well known name) proved a few years back.  Unless a Ross Perot style candidate runs (I understand he is not a libertarian) that can get some of the mindless voters engaged we unfortunately are screwed.  RIP Liberty...

@Tcope  If he was the Tea party candidate they would have endorsed him. He's not.

@Tcope

Maybe he should start a new trend and point out the teklan has done NOTHING of value for Americans and tell them where to stick it......

But that would take courage.

RadicalRuralDem

@Tcope LOL. They were both moderate corporatists who only pander to Tea Partiers to get through the runoff. Perdue didn't get the endorsement because he had a temper-tantrum over not automatically being given the endorsement.

StraightNoChaser

@Tcope the press is not missing anything they are holding the tea party's feet to the fire on their opposition to government bailouts.  Either you are for it or you are against it.  Perdue was and still is in favor of Wall Street bailouts.  I am still waiting for the tea party opposition rally at the state capital against Perdue just like they did against Obama the day after his first inauguration.  If it does not happen it will speak volumes about the true agenda of these tea party folk and the national press is going to have a field day... Count on it.

@RoyalDawg  The ignorance of the American voter is much more concerning than the immaturity in my view. The present administration is an example of ignorant voters voting race and "cool" while knowing nothing about the seriousness of our country's condition and the state of the world today.

The electorate today in our country is a disgrace and a reflection of the fact that our education system is not first or second in the world, but something like 27th............

@creative Thank you! I'm kinda like you I've been interested in the movement since High School.

It maybe that we are screwed but know we will be fighting to the end, a.  Right now we have 6 candidates in the state:

Amanda Swafford--US Senate

Andrew Hunt-Governor

Ted Metz-Insurance Commissioner

John Monds-PSC-1

Aaron Gilmer PSC-4

Jeff Amason-House District 21 (Cherokee Co, pending the petition for those who don't know anyone who doesn't run as an R or D for a nonstatewide race has to get a petition of 5% of registered voters in the district or about 1,750 in Jeff's case)

I think this year will be a better year than we've seen because of how bad the choices are and the anti-incumbent mood will help to. This is going to be a good year.

It may not be soon but I think the day will come when our candidates start winning, this can't go on. I think we would've done better in 08 if we didnt have Barr, he had to checkered of a past (things like doma) to be running as a Libertarian at all, forget on top of the ticket.

@StraightNoChaser  The national press ?....you mean the moron Obama loving society that refuses to do its job and investigate IRS criminals, Benghazi terrorist attacks, illegal immigration scams to buy the Latino vote, Iran non-negotiation fraud,  betrayal of our allies especially Israel....not to mention the lies getting Obamacare passed....the national press...a disgrace for the US....

Now that you've used both your handles, I would encourage all republicans who didn't get a candidate crazy enough to suit them to vote libertoonian.

It would be nice to have two clown cars vying for the same parking space.

StraightNoChaser

@theoriginaltruth @StraightNoChaser so when is the rally?  I'm still patiently waiting  for the answer. You know the one that is against government bailouts that Perdue loved so much (wall street). That's what I thought  the tea party already has zero credibility now they  have entered the twighlight zone. Too funny.  Look in the mirror thats what you call a hypocrite (I could say worse but I'm feeling nice today) BTW when is Sarah Palin coming with her screeching voice to rail against government bailouts.

StraightNoChaser
StraightNoChaser

@Punditator @StraightNoChaser he supports wall street bailouts, there is a big difference in supporting it and having a say.  Hell I didn't have any say in the Iraq war, lost friends and relatives but I supported the troops.   I was wondering how the tea party was going to spin it and you just let me know. Pitiful is what I call your excuse.

theoriginaltruth
theoriginaltruth

@StraightNoChaser @theoriginaltruth @RoyalDawg  The educational system in the US and Georgia is a flat out failure........evidenced by the fact that college students at major universities are ignorant to world events and even major leaders of our own country.....

The problem with anyone blaming the Republican for the plight of the US education system is the fact that it is being run by leftist Liberals with a bias against the things that made America great........period....

StraightNoChaser
StraightNoChaser

@theoriginaltruth @StraightNoChaser answer the question. You can't because now its obvious that the tea party is full of it. Not that sane Americans did not already know this. I just like to rub it in. I would love to see you hold your nose and vote for Perdue. BTW word has it that some Democrats did not vote for the president because he's black, I have more respect for them than I do a fake tea party person because at least they stuck to their values and I'm black. Priceless....

theoriginaltruth
theoriginaltruth

@StraightNoChaser Just for the record pal........I am not a Republican, a "Tea Partier", nor a Democrat or a Progressive.

I am an American, Viet Nam Vet Marine, educated in the DeKalb County school system when it was one of the best in the US. We were taught to think and use deductive reasoning and logic as well as to understand the lessons of history....and the fact that our country was founded on Judeo Christian principles....

I don't vote for a party, but for the best hope between the candidates to carry out what America really means....

BTW....black is irrelevant.....if you are an educated black who can think and reason, then research a man like Dr. Benjamin Carson who is smart enough to understand that race is not a valid reason to vote for a person.....

StraightNoChaser
StraightNoChaser

@theoriginaltruth @StraightNoChaser As an independent voter I vote for the person who has integrity and who will represent the majority of Americans and not just a select few. I work in healthcare and I know the state of Grady how can Dr. Carson defend denying healthcare to the sick and indigent?  What would be his defense for rural hospitals closing because of Nathan Deal refusing Medicaid?  Dr. Carson is a right wing tool who has put aside his oath to medicine for the sake of the mighty dollar. I think I already now enough about him to make me want to vomit.
