As polls close, ex-Gov. Sonny Perdue calls for ‘ground rules’ in GOP runoffs

Former Gov. Sonny Perdue arrives at his cousin’s election watching party.

Shortly before the polls closed, former Gov. Sonny Perdue arrived at his first-cousin’s election watching party with something to get off his mind.

“I’m a little concerned our primaries have become a little out of control over allegations and things. And I think it may be the best way to choose a candidate, but I think we’ve got to re-establish some ground rules about ethics and allegations there that are reasonable.”

He was speaking of the bruising nine-week runoff cycle - the longest and costliest in state history - that has left both businessman David Perdue and Rep. Jack Kingston bloodied in the race for an open U.S. Senate seat. The ex-governor joins a growing list of Republican honchos who argue that runoff system needs to be overhauled.

“I think we need to reevaluate as Republicans the things we’re do to one another. We did it in the ’12 cycle nationally, and we’re doing it here this time. And nine weeks of this is really damaging to all candidates.

One option that Secretary of State Brian Kemp said has come up for discussion is eliminating the federal runoff. Sonny Perdue, for one, said that should be on the table.

“Bruised, damaged is another thing. But what we do to one another is sometimes more damaging than what we do to our opponent. These types of runoffs are sometimes too long … It’s not the best way to choose a nominee.”

Oh for pete's sake AJC  - call it for Perdue already.

I know there is a data issue from SoS for Fulton, but Fulton is NOT gonna go for Kingston.

Nearly 7K vote lead, 142 counties are in.

I think the Perdue people can pop the champers and the Kingston people can start hittin' the whiskey.

Gonna go and have a look at the crosstabs on that poll  - missed it by damned near 10 points.

Ah yes, let's have a discussion of ethical political behavior led by the great Sonny Perdue.  We haven't forgotten, Sonny.  And we noticed cuzz never used you in his ads.  Why?  Because you were the worst governor the state ever had.  And you were a total jerk.  Even the repubs despised you by the time you were done.  Let's hope Georgia is not dumb enough to elect another Perdue.

Nunn runs on her appointment to some Committee by a Bush and is to afraid to put her party affiliation in her ads.  Half of her support in polls at this point probably think she's a republican.  She doesn't stand a chance.

Kingston is running out of places to find votes.

Much of his stronghold is already in.

Down 5K votes (and that margin has been increasing the last 30 minutes) and not a whole lotta votes left to find in friendly territory.

Gonna have to reverse my early morning prediction and say that Perdue will win.  Maybe by as much as 2 points.

Republicans should choose to duel at five paces and no cheating.

These people are pitiful. From the beginning of the primary and in the runoffs, they could not field a single candidate in the entire state that was worth a bucket of warm spit; not a one of whom could boast a single accomplishment, put forth a single vision, or posit a single solution to the myriad problems the state and nation faces. I doubt if a single one of them is able to dress themselves in the morning. Instead all anyone heard was how conservative/tp they are, and what a rat their opponent is. No enunciation of a vision, no proposed solutions, just “vote for me, because my opponent is a real a%*$# hole.

Now these morally and ethically bankrupt WATB's are all boo-hoo hoo over the process, instead of facing the fact that their party is bereft of ideas and ideals, just like their national party.

Newsflash repups, “I hate Obama” is not a strategy nor a platform. It is just a sign of a sick mind and a very sick party.

#weknownathan is enjoying this article. The most entertaining thing Sonny Purdue said since writing the letter to the editor crying about how the AJC was not saying nice things about the Bulldogs. (And then they lost again the weekend after that.) Which was the most productive thing Sonny did in office.

AJC calls it for Loudermilk.

Memo to Bob Barr

OUCH - that's gonna leave a mark.

Hah.  This from the same party that talked term limits ... and then had HOW MANY elected official continue in office far beyond their agreed-upon term limit?

Methinks they don't follow rules very well.

Michelle Nunn's constituents would like to give our regards and condolences. Sincere thanks for the gift that will keep on giving and giving and giving.  PS...I would offer a bandage but healthcare is not part of the GOP agenda.

Set up an instant runoff, by voting for your first choice, and then your second choice.  It would require new voting technology, but that is sure to be much less expensive than this Eric Holder required nine week fiasco we just witnessed.

That might be the funniest thing that good ol'Sonny have ever said!!!!!

Go back to Reagan's Eleventh Commandment, "Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republicans." The corollary is that anyone speaking ill of a fellow Republican should not receive a vote from Republicans.

"But what we do to one another is sometimes more damaging than what we do to our opponent."

That's because "one another" are more likely to honestly be MORE CORRUPT than your so called opponent Sonny Boy

Well, ya know what Sonny: There is nothing in the current rule book that says candidates have to run dirty campaigns, tell lies and half-truths in their advertising to smear their opponent, and in doing so hand a whole quiver of political arrows to their eventual opponent in the general election.  Michelle Nunn Whatserface's campaign people must be salivating over all the ammunition this campaign has produced. They don't need to do new TV spots---all they need to do is re-run the loser's spots against the winner when they face him this Fall.  What ever happened to courtesy, honor, and truth?  All are sadly lacking in today's muck-raking political campaigns.

We should use non-partisan primary. There is no need for run-off. Top 2 will continue.

Somehow, I envision that Michelle might mention sonny, even show a couple of pictures of him.

@Wejjr235 You just keep clicking your heels and hoping for that. "Senator Nunn" has a familiar, and comforting, ring to it!

America may be a bit disenchanted with Obama, but they despise Congress.

Per Gallup

Obama approval  43% weekly average

Congress  15% weekly average

Elect Michelle Nunn!

Elect Jason Carter!

You knuckleheads just love to make stuff up and then spew it like you just downed 3 Chinese burritios.

Had Sec Kemp and the good ole boys down in the dome known and done their jobs, the courts never would have had to act.

@bigdoggie1 @Wejjr235  Maybe George I, who appointed her to the only achievement she can speak of, will come help her out.  Daddy Nunn hasn't been seen in public since the early 90's.

Hey sockpuppet

Why would Nunn be running mass media buys?

She won her primary. She's saving her nickels for the general.

@Kamchak @Wejjr235  I just know the television ads I viewed on television.  I have a job and don't need to compile a dossier on Sam Nunn's daughter. A twitter ad costs nothing and reaches no one.  I have a job and your parents need their computer back.  Sweet dreams and a thousand points of light to you, sport.

@Wejjr235 " I just know the television ads I viewed on television."

Thanks for clearing that up!  If you had said "I just know the television ads I viewed on radio," we would have known for sure you were guano crazy. Now we are left with the impression you're just plain, ordinary run of the mill nuts.
