Second wave of GOP attack ads labels Jason Carter a ‘liberal trial lawyer’

By Greg Bluestein

The Republican Governors Association had vowed that its first ad barrage against Democrat Jason Carter wouldn’t be its last. This morning, the group followed through with a second wave of ads that paint the Atlanta state senator as a “liberal trial lawyer.”

The 30-second spot shows black-and-white images of Carter as a narrator tells viewers the Democrat led the legal fight against Georgia’s voter ID laws and invokes his vote against a proposal banning state-sponsored insurance plans from paying for abortions.

The RGA won’t comment on how much it’s shelling out, but we’re told it’s more than $500,000. The ad will air in Macon, Columbus, Albany, Augusta and Savannah television markets. Atlanta viewers, meanwhile, will continue to see the first ad that debuted last month.

Gov. Nathan Deal, the beneficiary of the ad blitz, is locked in tight polls with Carter and these attack ads aim to drive down the Democrat’s numbers long before the November showdown.

It’s worth pointing out that Deal, a former judge and prosecutor, has shied away from harping on the “liberal trial lawyer” line against his opponent. That may be because he’s so far enjoyed the lion’s share of support from the trial bar.

Carter last week answered the first barrage, which focused on his willingness to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, with a pair of minute-long introductory ads around the state. But the campaign, which has raised nearly $2 million to Deal’s $8 million, likely can’t afford to answer each RGA wave now if it wants to counter Deal later.

Carter spokesman Bryan Thomas in a statement Tuesday afternoon deemed the ad blitz “pathetic” and said it amounted to a Washington bailout for the campaign.

“The ad tells you everything you need to know about what DC Republicans think about Gov. Deal’s chances and how they are going to run his campaign,” said Thomas.

Here’s the ad’s script:

Jason Carter is a liberal trial lawyer. So, on important issues, where does Jason Carter stand?

Right to life? Carter supports taxpayer funding for abortions.

Voter ID laws? While our voter ID laws prevent illegal immigrants from voting, Jason Carter sued to have them overturned.

And Obamacare? Carter believes expanding Obamacare should be “on the table.”

Here’s a better idea. This election, let’s take Jason Carter’s liberal ideas off the table.

I heard a rumor that Jason Carter has a black baby, just like John McCain; why isn't Fox News all over this?

What a State!

Rife with people who would vote for a crook rather than face facts.

I wonder how much longer dems will hold out hope that they actually have a chance here in bright red Georgia?

Georgia Republicans:

Voting against their own self interests. Most of these rural dirt farmers make less than 25k and they love to cut off their nose to spite their faces. All you have to do is bring up religion, immigration, BLACKS, and gays and they will ignore everything else to vote for some fellow hillbilly

Another reason Deal might not be mentioning his time as a trial lawyer is because he was probably a Democrat at the time.

My Daddy was a Democrat and my Grandpa was a Democrat. I've never been a Democrat, but my Republican Party is trying to turn me into one.

The HuffPost poll Jim cites shows his candidate Jason Carter trailing Governor Deal by three points. (No indication if that's among likely voters.)

An 11Alive poll done last week has Gov. Deal ahead by six points among likely voters.

You mean he's not a liberal trial lawyer, or he's upset that was revealed? Kinda like Obama's people bristling when he's called a socialist or marxist.

@GaBlue Total BS. Seniors out vote any other population group by far. The article you posted did not say one word about voter id, seniors and their HC

@stevedollar2013

It is an inevitable demographic shift.

Even with the republiklan efforts to strangle education, enough people will be able to see the damage inflicted on themselves and their neighbors wreaked when voting for these incompetents.

@stevedollar2013 All the way to election day and then they will come on here the day after and state they NEVER thought the lib would actually win.

@kbb3 Its certainly better than voting for someone who wants to raise taxes to pay for more people to sit at home and not work....

@JackClemens Interesting.. That's what I here all the time from old timers that they didn't leave the dem party. The dem party left them. No one in their right mind would support any dem and what they stand for. Higher taxes and their support for immoral repulsive behavior is just not a party I would be part of...

@Lexi3 Or fascist.  Or even liberal.  The correct term nowadays for all these is "progressive".  (Elimination of individual rights for anyone but themselves apparently constitutes "progress" to them.)

@td1234,

Bless your heart. Do you have a hard time following a map or recipe as well? Let me slow it down for you, precious. The need to show an ID to vote is not -- all by itself -- a massive inconvenience. You need one to do lots of things. GETTING a new ID when yours expires has indeed become much more difficult in this state since the Voter ID law went into effect. The burden of producing the newly-required documentation is much more difficult for senior citizens for logistical reasons. And btw, logistics are everything.

Hence, it's harder for them to vote out the legislators and Governors who screw them out of the health care and services they need. After all, vilifying the AARP (the organization that invented giving a shiz about Grandma) only goes so far.

@honested That is ASSuming that HIspanics will vote and since they are Christians and work hard will vote with the moochers once they realize they will have to take care of them with their hard working money.

@honested @JackClemens Oh yeah, it's a really big tent.  Unless you have a problem with same-sex marriage.  Or you think women shouldn't be able to kill their unborn babies.  Or you don't buy into the farce known as man-made global warming.  Or you like to express your religious beliefs.  Or basically if you disagree with anything liberals believe.  Unless you fall into one of those categories, they'll welcome you with open arms.

EdUktr

@MoFaux @EdUktr

You're right, of course. Gov. Deal could be leading Carter by an even wider margin!

td1234
td1234

@honested @EdUktr Not when these polls have the Libertarian candidate between getting 5 to 7% of the vote when historically they usually get between 2 or 3%. Those Libertarians are not going to be voting for Carter.

td1234
td1234

@GaBlue And with that skillful dance you still did not address the basic truth that Seniors out vote all other groups in the state by large margins.

BTW: I am officially a Senior now and I have no problem. My parents and aunts, uncles have no problem so who are all these people having problems getting the proper id?

GaBlue

@MasterJ

Bless your heart. No Democrat will ever MAKE you enter a same sex marriage, impregnate a woman who's not your devoted wife, or pick up a -- gasp! -- science book to educate your ignorant self on how the elements in the world God made actually interact. Furthermore, you are still free to pray whenever you want. Bless your heart.

What will you do when the shift occurs? Maybe move to Alabama where even the nuts have no opposition?

@td1234

Your license will expire, Sweetness. The documentation you need to renew it has changed.  Most people are only realizing this when they go up there to renew -- as they always have -- and they're turned away. Maybe YOU have a little lockbox with all the official papers you've ever received in your life, but not everyone does. Records are lost over time, moving, fires, etc. By the way, your Auntie will need the official, certified copy of the marriage license she obtained in 1954. Good luck!

td1234
td1234

@honested There is no tide rising. Jim has stopped posting polls since they are now showing the Republican leading.

Only move I am planning on is to FL when I retire because they have no state income tax and GA will not be getting my 6% any longer.

td1234

@GaBlue @td1234 My License expired last year and I took my Passport and BC. They did not even look at the BC.

My Son went last week to get his first DL and they accepted his passport and did not look at his BC. Now he did have the statement from the school stating he had over a 3.0 GPA that they looked at.

Bless your heart

Nice going! Passports totally work for both renewing a license and for voting. They are federal ID's that the state has to honor.

If you hadn't had a current passport with you, you wouldn't have had such a breezy time of it. Please give yourself another gold star.

Could you quot the passages that refer to 'paying for more people to stay at home'?

Didn't think so.

Raising taxes, however, is obvious to anyone able to determine the degree to which the military is bankrupting the US.

Now, among your many other self professed talents, you have become a mind reader.

Of course the fall back is whining about 'Socialism'.

News flash, in a 'Socialist' society, everybody who can work is expected to, period.

No free passes just because daddy left you a pile of money to hide behind.

Does that help you understand where your friends bigoted view of the world was generated and why it is directed a social class other than the the one that benefits from low taxes and cozy government contracts?
