In which possession of a MARTA card becomes grounds for a GOP attack

By Jim Galloway

A Republican governor and one Democratic candidate for Senate have indicated a certain reluctance to appear on-stage with their primary opponents. House Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, doesn’t share their concern.

On Tuesday night, the third most powerful figure in the state Capitol debated Sam Snider, a tea partyist and Gilmer County high school wrestling coach. Video has been posted by fetchyournews.com.

An accompanying write-up includes this paragraph:

Things got heated quickly when Snider showed he was not intimidated by his opponent. Snider went after Ralston for his support of TSPLOST and even went so far as to point out that Ralston was proud to have a MARTA card. Ralston responded by chiding how Snider was not offering any solutions, just criticism. Ralston then capitalized on what may have been a misstep by Snider when he commented on government over reach on a Ginseng bill. Ralston told Snider to read the bill before he spoke about it again.

I’ve embedded the video above. Snider’s remarks on transportation begin at about the 12:45 mark. In part:

“I think Mr. Ralston was saying that he had not supported TSPLOST….It is my understanding that he has a MARTA card, and that what’s good for Atlanta is good for Georgia. And it’s my understanding that TSPLOST was passed by the House, but did not get passed by the voters of this state.

“And if I’m not mistaken, TSPLOST would have expanded MARTA, and that was supposed to be good for me and Gilmer County…..”

What infantile foolishness, but we are talking a Republican debate.  Two twits half a wit shy of being half-wits.

Have you heard the latest about Houston, TX Road Kill Possum Republicans and TSPLOST?

George Bush spent 8-years refusing to fund rapid transit in Houston, and their folks with the same mindset as North Fulton, Cobb and Gwinnett (Suburbs) refused to be taxed.  Obama took office, the City of Houston approved TSPLOST, and now they have rapid transit up and running.

Like the freeloading Suburbs of Atlanta,  the Houston Suburbs are now complaining like crazy about the horrible traffic, how the rail lines do not extend far enough for them to easily access the services, and they don't want to be taxed.  ROTFLMAO.

While Road Kill Possum Republicans like Ralston and Snider debate about something they have no control, the folks in the consolidated government of Columbus/Muscogee County passed a TSPLOST.  They are looking at more than $600 million to reduce congestion before it gets too bad, expand local mass transit, and work on getting express high speed rail.

Think about that folk in North Fulton, Cobb and Gwinnett while you get steered around by the nose by some rural legislators and Tea Party folks who could care less if you are stuck in traffic.

Why is everyone shooting the messenger? As a lifelong Republican who rides the Marta line to the airport and back every week, I think Sam Snider is an idiot. I get an extra 40 minutes to read and prepare for my week that I wouldn't get by driving. I am pleased to see that the Marta trains are often packed these days and every rider represents a car that isn't adding to Atlanta congestion. I think I will go online now and make a donation to Mr. Ralston.

Neither Ralston, Snider and anybody else in rural areas like Gilmer County should keep their noses out of local affairs.  Most knotheads forget that the reason that TSPLOST was rejected due to the confluence of conservatives not trusting their legislators and wanting to be stuck in traffic because they don't want their taxes raised, and folks  who already have access to MARTA and refusing to be taxed to get them unstuck.

Every time I think I might break down and renew my subscription to the AJC, then I see a slanted, slam piece showing his partisan journalism (if you can call it that), and all thoughts go away.

Galloway is the liberal TMZ of the AJC.

If he ever wrote an even handed story about Republicans or Tea Partiers, his bald head would explode!

Imagine, a dimwit in possession of a 'tea party card' ridiculing ANYBODY for owning a MARTA card?

At least the MARTA card will get you somewhere!

The operative part of that exchange was Ralson's support of TSPLOST which the public overwhelmingly rejected, and the fact that Ralson was "proud" to have a MARTA card - not just "possession" as the improper headline states.

Liberal garbage blog.

If that was Snider's best shot, then I think he should apologize to those who came to hear a substantive debate and just leave. What a waste of time.

Because, you know, only THOSE people have MARTA cards ...

...and even went so far as to point out that Ralston was proud to have a MARTA card.

And there's your sign.

Maybe, Jim, the MARTA card was grounds for a "Snider" attack—rather than one involving an entire political party?

@CuriousPrime Since Bush was Governor of Texas for only six years and as president rapid transit wouldn't have been his concern. What part of the rest of your post is truthful?

@SmartAleck

Jim didn't write but three or four sentences and partial sentences giving an introduction to direct quotes and the video itself.  The idiot in the video was not edited out of context and makes a fool out of his own self with absolutely no assist by the reporter.  How could it be anymore "even handed"?

@SmartAleck  BTW, feel free to write an even handed story about Republicans and Tea Partiers.  Please help us out, got anything positive on Snider or Ralston?

Georgia is run by Republicans and Tea Party folks, and  Road Kill Possum Republicans seldom say anything positive or even-handed, even among themselves.  Snider and Ralston's antics were at a public forum, and it is not like they said anything other than bash each other or tout standard  RKP talking points for Galloway to write about.

Any 'even handed story' about the teaklan would need to carry the headline "Those Nutcases Are At It Again".

@SmartAleck Ooooh, did mean Jim Galloway hurt him feelings again. You just go ahead and cancel that subscription, put these people out of business. Show 'em how the invisible hand of the market works

@Retired-Soldier @CuriousPrime  INDEED, Bush was Governor for six years and the post cited that he was president for 8-years.  You are also correct, at no time was he concerned about transportation issues.

TRUTHS YOU CAN EASILY CONFIRM, BUT CAN'T FIND ON FOX NEWS:

1.  High Speed Rail has been a Federal goal since 1997

2.  George Bush was president for 8-years and there are two obvious reasons why he nor Cheney supported alternative means for transportation or energy initiatives.

3. North Metro Atlanta refused to be taxed and, what makes matters funnier, they also said they don't trust their elected Republican officials.

4.  The City of Houston applied for and got federal funds after Obama took office for a light rail system.

5.  Houston Suburbs are whining that there are no rail stations close to their untaxed communities

Um, did you watch the video?  I understand as a Georgia "Educator" you may lack reading comprehension based on our state's dismal test scores, but you can watch TV and remember what was said for 30 seconds or so, can't you?

The_Centrist

@EdUktr - Funny, but why do you bother to read the ultra left partisans who have nothing to add other than baseless opinion and snide remarks?  Just skip over them.

Example, Obama claims to want energy independence but has greatly reduced drilling on federal land.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/04/politics/fact-check-oil-gas/index.html
As mentioned above (and including data from part of the Bush administration), there has been a 42% decrease in leases and 37% decrease in drilling permits -- not 50%, as Romney implied.

Even the Institute for Energy Research acknowledged that "this decrease isn't a result of President Obama's policies exclusively, but it is the result of decades and policies that have systematically reduced energy production on federal lands."

Retired-Soldier
Retired-Soldier

@CuriousPrime @Retired-Soldier You are kidding correct? Just because something is a "goal" during one administration doesn't mean it is a goal for a different president. Example, Obama claims to want energy independence but has greatly reduced drilling on federal land.

I assume the two reasons you refer to are the two wars. Those are the same wars Obama continued for four years (Iraq) and continues the Afghanistan war to this very day. (in fact expanded that war)

Light rail = rapid rail, I think not.

When did suburbs learn how to speak?

@Retired-Soldier @honested@SmartAleck

Briefly, with the sort of consternation one might attend a dog fight.

Realizing it was nothing but the same kooks who somehow confuse the middle ages notion of 'survival of the fittest' with modern Civilization and conflate that with their confused notion that inadequate taxation is superior to properly funded Civilization, I felt my suspicions were confirmed, so I left.

I grew up with these people in the hinterlands. They are as wrong today as they were then.

CuriousPrime

@The_Centrist @EdUktr  So why do you bother to read and hopelessly try to coherently respond the ultra left partisans opinions and remarks?
