Paulding judge on leaving job to daughter: Other candidates were ‘perfectly free’ to sign up

By Jim Galloway

Paulding County Superior Court Judge James Osborne went on camera to explain that there was nothing fishy about the way he and his daughter choreographed their candidacies in such a way that Elizabeth Osborne Williams is now the only candidate to replace him.

Catch the background here. From Aaron Diamant of Channel 2 Action News:

Evidently the Judicial Qualifications Committee put it's foot down and is forcing Williams to abandon the run for her daddy's seat in exchange for not filing ethics charges against her and her father for circumventing the new qualifications law.

Where is Brian Kemp the Chief State Elections Officer in resolving this mess and reopening the qualification period?

What an embarrassment to Paulding County! As far as I'm concerned, he and his daughter have lost all incredibility. Yes, arrogant best describes Judge Osborne.

Arrogance to the NTH degree. Neither are worthy of holding the position. Of course they discussed and planned this. We live in a republic, not a monarchy. I hope someone qualifies as a writ-in candidate.

Boss Hogg had a nephew named Hughie, he too wore the big white suit!

Would be nice if our AG would rule this election tainted, to be re-qualified, and immediately removed the father for malfeasance in office!  Of course, that would mean and R judging the complete and callous disregard of the people by another R.

So how long and what else has he hoodwinked the public. So this is how they do things in the south. This must be the 1940s. And he has no shame.

Well, poor thing, all she'll have to do is rule on an illegal airport anyway.

Nothing to see here.

This is an old-fashioned Georgia Judge, acting in the old-fashioned way.  We  really do need to do away with judicial elections, but not with a appointment-only system - How about a system where all State judges start at the State Court level, then are promoted by some sort of committee to Superior Court, the Court of Appeals and then the Supreme Court.

"Now, honey.  Lots of really good lawyers are liable to run for judge if they know I'm quitting.  You can't win."  Becky continued to hold her breath until her face was bright red.  Finally, she exhaled, stamped her feet furiously, and whined, "But Daddy, I want to be judge!!  I hate you!"  She ran into her room and slammed the door.  Judge Osborne approached the door and knocked gently, pleading, "Pooky . . . Poochie-Pie . . . Don't hate Daddy.  I think I figured a way so even you can be judge . . ."

If we remain silent and don't call out these two shameless opportunists, then we are a weak and cowardly lot.

Perhaps this will be the impetus to change the state constitution to have judges appointed rather than elected. It's better than those who have no idea who the judge is, just voting "incumbent" election after election.

At the very least this judge has impugned the reputation of the judiciary and at most has violated the Judicial Canons. Anyone can file a JQC complaint. Bernie, you up to putting your money where your mouth is?

Running against a sitting judge is committing economic suicide. Every attorney in every county knows this.

Funny how these rural GOOBERS think like the Judge and good ole GEMA "I do not see a Problem" English. The Judges comment in Southern speak goes like this "I do not care what any of you think, I ain't doing what You want me to do, ain't gonna do it, fer git it. Now GIT, before I get My GUN."

uh...huh.

Does this Hick of a judge know the definition of NEPOTISM. "Ne-po-tism: the unfair practice by a powerful person of giving jobs and other favors to relatives".

If it smells like nepotism, looks like nepotism, feels like nepotism and sounds like nepotism, then chances are that's exactly what it is. I mean seriously??? They should both be fired immediately and disbarred for a period of time due to this. This looks like old school small town corruption.

The fix was in.  Nobody else had the inside information that the father was going to resign after the qualification period.  Candidates are reluctant to spend money on qualification and campaigns against down ticket offices like judgeships.

Probably "legal", though.

@Wascatlady  How do you know this judge is an R? Judges made all these races non-partisan several years ago because they did not want to be attached to a political party.

@Chris30338 but it happens all the time in Cobb. Their is a male judge running unopposed, who basically inherited his Daddy's job.  My divorce was originally with Daddy, now it goes to the son for any changes to Child support or custody.

There is also a female judge who in Cobb, who got her parents Judgeship as well.
