GOP Senate candidates sharpen elbows over Savannah port snub

By Greg Bluestein

Macon – The finger-pointing over the White House’s port of Savannah snub morphed to saber-rattling earlier this week. At Saturday night’s GOP Senate debate, the rhetoric verged on open warfare.

Several candidates mused that the Obama administration’s decision to block the dredging of Savannah’s port – the state’s top economic development priority – was a politically motivated ruse aimed at hurting the GOP field.

The premise is tough – the fact that Vice President Joe Biden was with Democratic front-runner Michelle Nunn that day put her in a bind – but the candidates seized on the Veep’s “come hell or high water” promise from last year.

“If you want to know the difference between Democrats and Republicans and you want a reason to vote Republican, Vice President Joe Biden gave it to us,” said Rep. Jack Kingston, a Savannah Republican who has been working on the project for more than a decade.

Quipped Rep. Phil Gingrey: “I guess hell and high water both came.”

But the lengthy push to deepen the port by five feet also opened a rift among the candidates casting themselves as outsiders. Karen Handel, the former Georgia Secretary of State, called it an “unconscionable” move that also underscored the ineffectiveness of the three sitting congressmen in the running.

Businessman David Perdue struck a similar note in a line of attack. Said Perdue:

“If it took me 17 years to do something in business I’m afraid I wouldn’t have a very good career. That’s an indication of so many things. A government out of control is one … But where were our elected officials in Congress? … It’s unconscionable it’s taken us this long.”

His first-cousin, former Gov. Sonny Perdue, was also a politician who made the deepening of the port a priority. David Perdue said after the debate the remarks weren’t intended to ding the ex-gov or the current one, that instead he was frustrated with the federal Environmental Protection Agency and other regulators that have held the project up.

***

The same demographic changes that have Georgia Democrats giddy have unnerved Republicans. At Saturday’s GOP Senate debate, the question about how to appeal to minorities was in the spotlight.

The five best-known Republicans leaned on familiar tropes. David Perdue argued that reclaiming the “high ground when it comes to economic opportunity” will draw more newcomers to the fold, while Karen Handel promised to go where the community is – regardless of political affiliation.

Rep. Paul Broun pointed to the diverse staff he’s hired. Rep. Phil Gingrey cited the work he does each month at a charity clinic that serves mostly Hispanics. And Rep. Jack Kingston pointed to stats that showed roughly one-third of his district is black. Said Kingston:

“We Republicans stumble all over this question. Minorities just like the rest of us want jobs. If we’re going to turn around the economy, we need to push back against regulations that kill jobs … That would serve every person in here, regardless of their race.”

None, though, could trump the response from Derrick Grayson, a minister who is the only black Republican running for the open seat.

“I’m already in the black community – that’s where I live,” he said with a smile. “I’m meeting them where they are.”

***

Not surprisingly, none of the GOP candidates were big fans of the proposal for stiff Pentagon cuts under consideration in Washington. That’s a crowd pleaser in Macon, where politicians are regularly nervous about the fate of the Robins Air Force Base in nearby Warner Robins.

But the most vociferous answer came from Kingston, who has made his chops on military. Said Kingston:

“I have a consistent record making sure our soldiers, sailors and airmen never have to fight a fair fight … I don’t want to kill a fly with a sledgehammer. I want to kill a fly with five sledgehammers.”

***

Phil Gingrey: Not a fan of rap music. The Marietta Republican went down a bit of a rabbit hole when asked what he would do to stop youth violence. It started with comments that the White House should better support community-based groups, such as the Boys and Girls Club. It ended with this:

“This Hollywood crowd continues to put out the trashiest videos, movies, rap music. What does the federal government do about it? Nothing. I’m sick of it. And I know you’re sick of it too. It’s got to stop.”

(His campaign, by the way, noted afterward that he doesn’t want feds to infringe on free speech rights that, yes, include rap music.)

The Republicans have led Georgia for more than a decade and have snubbed the President at every turn on Obamacare.  Why would the President throw us an economic bone?  You reap what you sow.

Michelle Nunn has nothing going for her other than her daddy's name.

Last week the democrats were unthinkingly suggesting that Obama snubbed the people of Georgia by de funding the dredging of the port of Savannah  because of a his politics. Now they are all running away from that idea as a political loser.  I don't blame them except for the obvious flip flop hypocrisy of it all.  It makes both Carter and Nunn look like weasels to be on both sides of the deal.

Wonder why there are no pics of Carter or Nunn with Joe Biden ( who a few months ago was certain of funding ) who came to town to "raise money" and give the bad news?  Why do none of the democrat candidates want their picture with Joe?  Bet they don't want Obama to come campaign for them either.

Isn't it interesting that all these guys beholden with the Tea Party and their anti-Federal government rhetoric are complaining here that the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT isn't playing ball with them?

Happy Friday. Let us turn from the sad news of the world and nation, and toward the Mt. Gox Bitcoin disaster. I am generally agnostic on the Bitcoin phenomenon. I know libertarians like Bitcoin, which you'd think would dispose me against it; but then, libertarians also like Frank Zappa and that hasn't spoiled his music for me.

But it's an ill wind that blows no one some good -- the Gox thing has roused a stirring peroration at Business Insider by Erik Voorhees, calling on his libertarian comrades, many of them dispossessed Bitcoin billionaires, to be brave and not give up the dream, and it has warmed my heart with the gift of laughter.

[...]

And that right there is the tell.  Whenever a libertarian -- raised on the Virtue of Selfishness, and inclined to believe that the dismantling of society will inevitably benefit "producers" such as himself, and is therefore a good thing whatever happens to the sheeple -- starts talking about how the world needs whatever racket he's got going, hold onto your virtual wallet.

Somewhere out there, at the crossroads of Narnia, Galt's Gulch, and the Floating City, there's a world where the dream will never die. And when Voorhees and his pals finally all go there, maybe we can have some peace and quiet around here.

Issakson and Chambliss have lost three military bases, one major military aircraft contract, at least 5,000 jobs, failed to get a water deal, and now failing to secure funding for Savannah.  Great liberal democratic senators like Walter George, Richard Russell, and Herman Talmedge are rolling in their graves.

If anyone missed reading Paul Krugman's latest column in Saturday's AJC, here is the link to that column straight from the NY Times, and the last paragraph of Krugman's column:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/07/opinion/krugman-the-hammock-fallacy.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&_r=0

"Which brings us back to the hypocrisy issue. It is, in a way, nice to see the likes of Mr. Ryan at least talking about the need to help the poor. But somehow their notion of aiding the poor involves slashing benefits while cutting taxes on the rich. Funny how that works."

Another reason to vote Democratic this fall.

If Kingston has been workng on this for more than a decade, why didn't he get it funded under the Bush administration?  Oh I know, just like now, he can,t show how he will pay for it.

Another East-Ukraine City Falls To Pro-Russian Protesters As Ukraine Denies Sending Troops To Crimea

Despite clear evidence otherwise, presented here extensively yesterday, this morning Ukraine has denied that is has "plans to send armed forces to Crimea" and instead Ukrainian troops are performing "training exercises" in base, Interfax news agency quoted Acting Defence Minister Ihor Tenyukh as saying on Sunday. Responding to media speculation about Ukrainian military movements after Russian forces took control of Crimea, Tenyukh said the only troop movements that might be seen would be from one base to another to take part in the training exercises. "No movements, no departures for Crimea by the armed forces are foreseen. They are doing their routine work which the armed have always had," he said. Right, and Russia just happened to launch an ICBM as a "drill" in the middle of the greatest Cold War re-escalation in 30 years.

Confirming just this were just released photos from another major city in east Ukraine, this time Lugansk, where pro-Russian protesters just stormedand took over the city administration building. Their demand: to be part of the March 16 referendum to become part of Russia.

I find it humorous and an extreme case of pandering to see the extent these 7 GOP Senate candidates will go to in order to please the extreme right of the GOP. The funniest stance they are forced to adopt is to agree to a strict interpretation of creationism that claims the earth is only 6,000 years old. Do you think that any of these clowns really believe that?

The Truth Behind The Crisis in Ukraine. US “Covert Manipulation” and the Resurging Cold War

The hypocrisy that is part and parcel of US foreign policy throughout the globe has never been more glaring and blatant than now being demonstrated in Ukraine. Rather than succumb to the propaganda-disinformation blitz that it is Russia acting as the bad guy-oppressor, a slightly deeper examination of recent behind-the-scenes events in Ukraine would clearly indicate the opposite.

Since November it was the US and NATO forces in the form of a US State Department cover that launched an all out assault on the democratically elected Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych and his government.

VP Joe Biden has many outstanding qualities, including his understanding, from his personal experiences, of working class Americans.  Biden does not need to change, but many Southerners need to change their attitudes toward him and President Obama. These Southerners should simply release themselves from long-standing animosities toward the federal government, which Biden represents to them.

Those feelings against the federal government, in all areas, are irrational and are based on the South's history of defeat in the Civil War. Georgians, you are better than this. Get over these long-standing feelings and recognize that it was best that the South did lose the Civil War. Slavery had to have ended and so did Jim Crow's segregation laws within a nation which believes in liberty and justice for all. Georgians should be glad that the Vice President is showing an interest in Georgia, and we should all show up out to support him, here, in Georgia.  Moreover, Georgia's politicians should stand proud in welcoming either VP Biden or President Obama to Georgia.

@Bulls_3y3 @BravesFan456- I saw the Country Club Republican Hollywood Saxby in MAERETTA with his grandson. Boy! How they both  Looked like a Million Bucks on a Saturday after noon.  The grand son who was dressed from head to Toe in Braves Official Gear..maybe a $1,000 worth easily.

The Kid could not have been no more than 7 years old. What other Georgian can dress their Kid in such expensive clothing other than the Rappers of Atlanta?

As Hollywood left the eatry All watched Hollywood Saxby get into one of those Brand New Caddies you see advertised on TEEVEE. It was parked far away from all of the other Cars. It is Clear SAXBY thinks he is FAR above the average American. He did not smile or speak to anyone.

Saxby has his retirement benefits in the Bag...so their is no need to Speak to anyone or say Thank - you for The GOLDEN PARACHUTE that awaits him every month for the rest of Life. Thanks to the Thousands of Georgia Republican GOOBERS who voted for him all of these years.
