Some artistic push-back on Snowjam ‘14

By Jim Galloway

Much of the criticism falling down on Gov. Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed can be traced to the optics of a Tuesday luncheon celebrating Reed’s award as Georgian of the Year by Georgia Trend magazine.

Just as the snow was hitting metro Atlanta.

The magazine cover was the work of Steve Penley, a Macon artist whose work is largely concentrated in the political world – often Republican. But Penley’s posted the following message on his Facebook page for those criticizing the both the Democratic mayor of Atlanta and the state’s Republican governor:

Yeah, it was weather that the Gov. and the Mayor couldn't be bothered with despite having said they would fix things after 2011.

Yet, another attempt to cover up by the REPUBLICAN MACHINE by using the excuse it's MOTHER NATURE'S FAULT . "If you can convince the lowest white man that he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket."- LBJ quote in 1960- The best summary of how the Republican machine continues to brainwash its party using their warped interpretation of the Bible and their religious traditions to keep its members ranting about commies, perverts, homosexuals, and non believers. REPUBLICAN BLIND FOLLOWERS stay loyal mostly out of RELIGIOUS FEAR. The oldest trick in the book... used since WAY BEFORE ...the Dark Ages... to control the masses. Republican voters are ALL about claiming the title with the label marker symbol of an ELEPHANT. Brainwashed... they could really care less about the corrupt nature of the individual candidate they support or elect . It's about the shallow short lived satisfying act of their team WINNING.

Yep it is the weather...and the National Weather Service told you at 3:38 am on Tuesday what was coming and YOU RAW DEAL ignored the warning...BTW that is a Warning with a capital W as opposed to a Watch.  You are supposed to know the difference.

I completely agree.

On the other hand, it's conceivable that Deal stiffed the city of Atlanta on purpose. Didn't vote for him did they? Maybe someone called someone and said: 'time for some traffic problems in Atlanta'.

The people of Atlanta may not have to wait for a terrorist attack as their next disaster.  It could come in the form of Atlanta's infrastructure collapsing.  Someone else mentioned how the city is building Trolley lines while its infrastructure falls apart.  It's true. The bridge on Spring Street next to the CNN parking lot (and I doubt it is the only one) is on it's way to collapse.  The area under the bridge has had fencing up for two years to keep the public from crossing the lot under the bridge because concrete is constantly falling from the underside of the bridge.  That same bridge has an enormous amount of traffic, especially Monday through Friday.  Are they going to wait until the bridge collapses to do anything?  Wonder how often the Governor and Mayor ride across that bridge, or if they do?

If a terrorist attack were to hit Atlanta, as happened in NYC, I would hope that Atlanta's citizens would be able to rely on their leaders to handle the situation here - as well as to stop other terrorist attacks from happening in the future - as well as the Mayor of New York City, Giuliani, had taken control of that unexpected disaster in NYC, at that time.

My state senator got his smug mug on the TeeVee last night, blathering about SnowJam, and how businesses and community leaders and government officials at all levels (federal, too!) need to do a better job of cooperating with each other. (Wow, really? What a brilliant insight, Senator! You're a geeeeenius!)

Of course, he opposed T-SPLOST that would have improved cross-jurisdictional transportation for all of us, preaches the the Federal government has no business interfering with Georgia, and supports making his precious North Fulton a whole separate county, so the folks there won't have to communicate or cooperate with any other jurisdiction

Does he think we're STUPID? Yes. Yes, he does. He got elected, so we must all be dumber than rocks.

English has no control over the schools, cities, or counties. Our government is so stratified, and people don't get it. Short of the Governor declaring a disaster (wouldn't occur until after the snow fell and bad things happened), English is in a state preparation job. When a disaster does occur, he looks to the state DOT to keep the roads clear, and the state patrol to assist. His staff does coordination and communications but he has to expect other agencies to do their job.

People should be pushing on their local officials, and we should also look at centralizing some authority rather than splintering it to the point of not having anyone with the authority to get the job done. To that point, I didn't see anyone at the state level (or Mayor Reed) ducking responsibility but without the authority it is hard to be responsible.

What Charlie English had on the Morning of January 28 was commonly known and described as a "BRAIN FART". They are Dangerous when You are iin Charge...You miss things.

However in  the LONG LISTS of reasons to Terminate for Lack of a Satisfactory Job  " BRAIN FARTS" is  WAY at the TOP! Too much is at stake. Too many Lives are at Risk.

The magazine cover was the work of Steve Penley, a Macon artist whose work is largely concentrated in the political world – often Republican.

So the message was for the benefit of the republicans out there. Must be why he wrote it with crayons. That's the medium in which most of them communicate.

During the Media Event as The Officials were Talking. Up stepped Charlie English. I cannot repeat what all was said but you can be pretty sure they were not Sunday School words at first Glance.

All LQQKED at Charlie......then silence...................Charlie spoke.......PANDEMONIUM! RIOTING! THROWING THINGS!  all followed by words like....Dear Lord Help US!  We are in Big Trouble! Not a smarting LQQKING GUY at ALL!  oh..CRAP!  I and MY Family, Gotta GET OUTTA HERE!  along with a few other adjectives.

That was Charlie's introduction to the People of Georgia and the metro Atlanta area.

So Lets be Honest.

Nathan is coming up to the ALTAR! Until then... He is SAFE.

Kasim has 4years..Never Again! Until Then ...He is SAFE

I cannot emphasize my following warning thoughts enough to the public and to the leaders who have a responsibility to the public.  I will repost my prior warning to readers of this blog, below:

"Looking forward, we must use this unfortunate traffic situation to make sure that our governmental agencies are well prepared with strategic plans, well ahead of time, not only regarding approaching severe weather, but also regarding a possible terrorist attack upon Atlanta and its surroundings. If the roads were to become as impassable as they have been in this situation, imagine what would happen when all citizens were trying to get out of this area if poisonous gas fumes covered the blanket of air around Atlanta. Governmental agencies must be well-prepared for any of these possible situations."

The gubner's latest statement assures us there will be no more bad weather for the rest of the winter. He has had groundhogs delivered to his office, and to charley english's. The groundhogs have assured the gubner that no more bad weather is forthcoming. "That's good enuf for me" deal said.

MaryElizabethSings

I heard Gov. Nathan Deal ponder on television that if he had declared a state of emergency earlier and the snow had not come that that possible wrong decision would have cost Georgia's business community billions in dollars. He made that statement in the context of explaining how leaders can be criticized on whatever their calls may be. However, in my way of thinking, it does tell citizens what he was debating in his own mind about when to declare a state of emergency.

It's an old debate: Profit or people? Keep our public schools out of the hands of those who would run them for profit.

Those who dismiss the seriousness of what occurred last week are the politic players. Charlie should be very grateful Hundreds were not Killed and Injured. This is NOT Baseball where you get (3) three strikes and You are OUT.

SAFETY - Here! You ONLY GET ONE SHOT!    A Chance, if You Blow It...You're Done!

We Can No Longer Trust You to Protect Us going forward. If NOT, there will ALWAYS BE a LINGERING THOUGHT is Charlie on the JOB?  Any Hint of Emergency situation.."Charlie may be asleep at thw WHEEL, AGAIN!"

Or Charlie may give an instruction...all second guessing...What If Charlie is WRONG, AGAIN?

Everyone will have those SAME thoughts if Charlie STAYS. That fearfulness then causes to Question LEADERSHIP.

What are We Doing Here????????

What a crock.  I'm sure tired of hearing "get a grip, it's election year politics.'

Stupid thing to say.  My son in law abandoned his car along I  75 and walked home to Kennesaw.  He's young and healthy and had decent shoes, so he was able to do that.

There were many people who just couldn't make that decision, so they spent the night in their car.  "Cause of the lack of leadership of the Governor and the Mayor.

So please - if you weren't stuck in the situation - stop saying stupid things.

Accepting one's fate quietly seems to be the moral high ground around here. And that attitude certainly allows inept and corrupt politicians a lot of latitude to keep doing what they always do: pontificate and then do nothing to change the situation.

Another inane comment.  Not surprised that the fake centrist liked it.

I was out in the weather.

No one 'went berserk'.  Instead, they did what good people do everywhere - they tried to get home to take care of their families.

They couldn't do that not because they 'went berserk', but because our governor and mayor were too busy congratulating themselves to look out the window and think "duh, we may have a problem," and get trucks out to clear the highways.

But I guess in Republican world, it's our fault for not buying our own salt and sand truck, right?

Absolutely amazing....

Responsible, conscientious citizens will demand that their public servants do better.  Next time, if we do not insist on better than this, many more lives could be badly injured or could even die.  We must not take the easy route of putting our heads in the sand and ignoring what happened here.  We must insist to our politicians that they develop strategic plans of action that are workable, and that they have those strategic plans immediately ready, for the next time emergency actions are called for.

@PSWallace And what about your repub brethren in Cobb, Douglas, Gwinnett, Forsyth, etc. ? While Reed was singled out by the national media, I bet your roads in the counties and cities were clear and dry! Where were they in the "heat of the storm"? Where were their salt trucks and sand trucks? My niece needed 12 hours to go from Kennesaw State to Milton...the last miles traveled with her father that finally got to where she was stranded.
