A disturbing Snowjam email

By Jim Galloway

From our AJC colleague James Salzer, an email exchange that begins to explain what went wrong with Snowjam ’14.

The two players are Chris Riley, chief of staff to Gov. Nathan Deal, and Charley English, director of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency. Apparently we have a reluctance to communicate:

Kasim Reed and his entourage using the interstate emergency lane to get out to the Weather Channel for a 6 PM media opportunity on Tuesday night while mere citizens had been stuck on the roads for hours is simply the cherry on top of the crap Sunday he has been building this week.

Assuming it was imperative to get face time on national media through the Weather Channel rather than go on the local stations actually being watched in Atlanta perhaps he needs to learn about Skype. He already knows how to use Twitter to let us know Atlanta was ready for the snow

What an egomaniac. It is good to be king.

I hope all this will move Atlanta and the whole state to a better model of governance.  The incompetence and fumbling need to stop.  We need a new legislature and governor. There are leaders available who don't live on the political extremes, and we need to encourage them to come forward and run.

GOP: and its voter base in suburbs of Atlanta got what they voted for and deserved this week- but hey GOP keeps taxes low and no tolls on 400. So why complain about transportation being a disaster and school;s joke of the nation?

Remember Dems in state built MARTA and expanded all the local freeways in the eighties and started the Northern Arc to get trucks off 285. What has Deal and Purdue done for transportation in Atlanta????????????? Oh yeah the clogged the freeways with those express buses to the burbs and dropped tolls on 400 and slashed DOT workers 25%- You get what you voted for.

When you hire cronies rather than professionals, you get Georgia - and New Jersey.

The Carter boy needs to save up his allowance and buy a new tie.  Saw him on the teevee and he was looking really sadsack.

Memories are short in Ga as well as the rest of the country. By the time elections come around in May, this little weather debacle will be in the ancient history category to most Georgia's residents.

Quickly now, who was Governor during the blizzard of ninety three? I'll give you a hint about the Guvner: he was a party switcher

Congrats to Kasim Reed for making The New York Times in his apparent effort to prove that there is no such thing as bad publicity

Mayor Unapologetic as Questions Fly in Storm That Stopped Atlanta

Anyone who has listened to Kasim Reed, the former entertainment lawyer who became Atlanta’s mayor in 2010, knows the man who calls himself a street fighter likes to be forceful when he makes a point.

But for the past two days, as the national face of a city that was virtually incapacitated by two inches of snow and ice, Mr. Reed has come across more as peevish than powerful as he has done interview after interview, mostly rejecting criticism of the government’s role in Atlanta’s vast ice storm gridlock.

Nathan Deal re-elected is doomed..Nathan and his staff lied about they didn't know about the snow storm until Tuesday..Nathan Deal got the state workers and teachers and 650,000 Georgian who need Medicaid are mad with him..I heard the teachers and state workers are coming together to vote Nathan Deal out of the office.

It was funny hearing Mayor Reed saying that Atlanta invested over $2 million in snow removal after not getting help from the State in 2011, that he had no control over any school systems, that those stranded on the expressways and state roads were well outside Atlanta, and the media couldn't understand it.

Looks like Mr. Riley is going to have to change his e-mail address.  Nice going, Jimbo.

Open letter to the North,

You’ve had a good laugh bashing us. Could state/local authorities have done a better job? Absolutely. Would it have made much difference? Probably not.

The authorities knew snow was coming over 24 hours in advance. Why didn’t they announce Monday government offices and schools would close Tuesday? For starters over 50% of the time snow’s predicted barely a trace hits metro Atlanta. Imagine the howls from the ‘less government crowd’ if once or twice yearly hundreds of thousands stayed home with their kids for no snow?

Do you believe many private sector businesses would risk losing revenue on a less than 50% history of accurately predicting snow? Try apologizing to your boss in New York when it doesn’t snow.

So even with the public sector closing we’d still have had over a million cars hit the roads at noon instead of staggered over a 3-4 hour rush hour. Add in snow, damp/below freezing temps, quickly forming ice and thousands of trucks headed south, north or west daily on our beltway with hundreds jackknifing to block several lanes. As they say…’Sh*t happens’.

Yahoos don’t have enough snow plows/salt trucks? How much extra tax money would you allocate for 1-2 snow days every 3-4 years.

Almost 50 years ago I remember a population sign on Peachtree showed metro Atlanta hit 1 million. Now it’s 6 million. Name another large metro area with this explosive growth?

Guess where the extra 5 million came from? Well a sizeable portion came from up North. Why stay in New York, ride the subway, hail taxis, deal with the cold and smog, fear a night walk in Central Park, cramped in an aging Brownstone or rent-controlled apartment when you can move to Atlanta?

When your company re-located to Atlanta y’all jumped at the lower taxes, lower living costs, warmer weather and swapped the aging Brownstone for a new 3,000+ sq. ft. mini-mansion in a golf, swim and tennis neighborhood that we built just for you.

Atlanta’s mayor, Kasim Reed, presides over a city proper that essentially has the same population (around a half million) it had 50 years ago.

Regional planning sounds nice but Democratic Atlanta’s half million have always been outgunned in the legislature by a sea of GOP who love rooting for our teams, but won’t give us a fair share of the tax dollars.

Maybe every so often when you Yankees relocate here you could bring along a snow plow.

@dreluv  Would be sad to see if something like this is a deciding factor in a governor's race. Personally, I'll concede your conclusion likely only if and after the news media starts climbing all over Deal's back. Isn't that usually the deciding factor? How the media depicts the candidates. Look at the presidential election as the best example.

td1234
td1234

@dreluv Only if you turnout on May 20th and vote against him in the primary. If progressives think they can wait until Nov then Deal will be re-elected.

@Nobody_Knows I went to HS with Dr. Barge. He is a man with integrity and high moral standings. He is a little moderate on several some issues but is still in the conservative camp. I would say he is more of a compassionate conservative that believe in public education.

Right? Hey, no one who's ever lived here through an ice storm is bashing us, but yeah, I got a call from out west a little while ago: "You know everybody's making fun of you." I was not amused. Then he said, "The Donner Party is having a family reunion just so they can make fun of you!" Haha! I had to laugh. Haters gon' hate, but we can't let them get to us. :)

At least the other leaders had the good sense not to barrel down emergency lanes Tuesday evening to cross county lines to get face time on the Weather Channel in Cobb County rather than take care of business

Perhaps you should write a letter to The New York Times that wrote the story with your concerns

Draw your own conclusions as to how badly Reed messed up to get called out by the NYT, Jon Stewart on The Daily Show and MSNBC. It is not as if those shots are coming from Fox News

FWIW I voted for Obama twice if you are thinking only bitter Tea Party types are ticked off at Reed's attempt to spin his story by appearing everywhere but The Food Channel to get media exposure and apportion blame. Officials claiming government is part of the solution not part of the problem need to take care of business rather than send out delusional messages on their Twitter account that Atlanta is ready for the storm. Atlanta was as ready for this storm as Custer was ready at Little Big Horn

CherokeeCounty
CherokeeCounty

td, it might be a long shot, but Jason has a better chance of beating Deal than Barge does.  You're letting your personal friendship get in the way of your common sense.

Given the propensity of Georgians to vote against their own best interest, Deal will probably, sadly, be re-elected in the fall.  But if anyone beats him, it'll be Carter, not Barge.

Nobody_Knows

@td1234@Nobody_KnowsCool

Because you are all over Barge like a giddy school girl is it safe to say that you wont be fawning all over Deal at the Marietta square like a  groupie trying to get backstage at a rock concert?

td1234
td1234

@CherokeeCounty  I disagree. If the teachers and state employees stay as focused as they are now then there is a chance in the primary to upset Deal due to low voter turnout. If they do not unite and keep the intensity level then Deal will be re-elected.

td1234
td1234

@Nobody_Knows @td1234 A month ago I would agree with you but now that TRAGIC has over 12,000 pissed off state employees and teachers (both Republicans and Democrats) and this little snow incident and the pissed off citizens in north metro (both Republican and Democrats) I think his odds of defeating Deal in the primary on May 20th has went up from about 10% to about 40 to 45%.

Now if I can convince some of you progressives that voting for Barge in the primary is the only way your vote this year will count then it could possibly come true.

td1234
td1234

@dreluv Keep those positive thoughts going all you want but they just mean you are delusional. This state is not purple and will not turn blue this year. The only way to defeat Deal is to vote in the Republican primary on May 20th for Dr. Barge like all the teachers and state employees are going to do.

dreluv
dreluv

Td you a idiot...What does Georgia governor election have to do with President Obama.

Deal will lose the election he got teachers mad and state workers...Now Deal staff emailing each other about the snow storm Monday...All of them are liar.

Nobody_Knows

@td1234@Nobody_KnowsDon't care who was at the event.  I'm dealing with how you presented it when you brought it up at this or one of the other blogs.

You were so giddy about Deal that I could tell you were blushing when you spoke to him.

Maybe Barge is better who knows (time will tell) but you sure kicked Deal to the curb.

Do you know Barge or just a wannabe groupie?

td1234
td1234

@Nobody_Knows @td1234 Wrong. If you had actually seen the news at the time then you would have known the event at the Marietta square was to kick off a state wide bus tour for all Republicans that were running for statewide office.

Nobody_Knows

@td1234@Nobody_KnowsNice spin.  Now you speak of the other Republicans who were there.  When you previously brought it up it was all about Deal.

LOL

You are a comical fella.

td1234
td1234

@Nobody_Knows @td1234 I was at the square to support all Republican candidates 4 years ago. I happen to be able to talk to Deal for a few minutes during Johnny's speech. I have not decided if I would support Deal or not in the general election but I sure will not be voting for Carter unless he comes out and denouncing Obama and all of his policies.
